TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY TAX FIGHTERS LAUNCH PETITION EFFORT DEMANDING VOTE ON DOWNTOWN CONVENTION HOTEL!!!

Right now . . . Here's FIRST WORD on an important effort that attempts to seek voter approval for a project that has dominated City Hall for nearly two years but has yet to garner much private investment or participation from the voting public.

To wit . . .

CHECK THE LATEST EFFORT DEMANDING KANSAS CITY VOTE ON THE PRICEY PROPOSED DOWNTOWN CONVENTION HOTEL!!!

Take a look:

PROPOSED KANSAS CITY DOWNTOWN CONVENTION HOTEL: NOTICE OF INTENT TO CIRCULATE A REFERENDUM PETITION ON ORDINANCE 170255

CITIZENS FOR RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT (CFRG) will deliver to the KCMO City Clerks office, their intent to circulate a referendum petition to place the downtown convention hotel on a ballot so the taxpayers can vote on it. CFRG has collected an adequate number of signatures to get the process started.

CFRG will now explore the possibility of collecting the remaining signatures necessary to place the downtown convention hotel on a future ballot to be voted on by the KCMO taxpayers.

This downtown hotel project is estimated to take $167,000,000 in taxpayer’s cash, land and freebies. So far the City and the developers have elected to keep the partners, investors and financing details secret. Taxpayers should have a say in the matter since we are footing over 50% of the $300,000,000 price tag.

CFRG lost its last attempt to get this on a ballot but we know now, the judge got it wrong. The Missouri Supreme Court has corrected the error and future petitions with the proper number of signatures cannot be kept off the ballot by City Hall. This referendum will finally get it right and put the issue to a vote of the taxpayers. The taxpayers have asked us for the opportunity to vote on the downtown hotel.

And so . . .

Kansas City voters could finally get a say in a process from which they have been excluded.

  1. Why should we have to pay at all? If it was such a good idea. A private business would invest in the project.

  2. I think this goes back to the way that they did this. They go the votes of the outgoing council right before their term was expired and then shoved it on the new council like it was already a done deal. It was a very sneaky move and there was little transparency. Years later there is not very much progress and I wouldn't blame a private company for avoiding the whole mess altogether. If you start out in such a sneaky fashion, nothing good can come of it.

  3. Why should Sly need a vote? I thought he was king?

  4. I don't want my city in the hotel business. Why not focus on maintaining streets and sidewalks instead?

Unfortunately for any resident of KCMO like yourself, the city is already in the catering business, entertainment business, grocery store business, home remodeling business, corporate headquarters business, and pretty much anything else you can think of as long as some insiders can cut an under-the-table deal with the electeds on the 22nd and 29th floors of 12th and Oak.
By the time all the outstanding chits are called in, there will be precious little of the $800 million in bond proceeds to address anything you need like improved streets, sidewalks, or all the rest.
    A city that works,
    Just not for you.

  6. And let's not forget, in addition to the $30 million direct city subsidy of the downtown hotel, they will be raiding the $800 million free "sidewalk fund" to build all the sidelwalks, gutters and driveways and driveway entrances for the hotel. AND the same for the new airport, because what is a runway other than a very large SIDEWALK for airplanes?

The citizens got conned with 123GO Bonds. That money will flow through the sieve of corporate greed, and very few citizens will get free sidewalks.

  8. Folks, this ship has sailed. If you don't like progress, move to another city. I hear St. Louis is looking for new residents.

  10. progress? Really? Crappiest streets in the entire metro that haven't been maintained in a decade, abandoned burned out and dilipadated houses, crime and murder out of control for what? Take your progress someplace else dumbass

  12. 12:13 - that's why we just had a big bond election that overwhelmingly passed. Or did you miss that?

  13. You mean the money that's going to toy train and the airport? Remember this was a bond, bonds don't have anything written down as to what they're for. We fools took them for their word. They never promised us that the streets and sidewalks would get done.

  16. The only thing getting done is for downtown, the rest of the city has been ignored for too long but yet we have to pay extra taxes for all these gimmes Mayor Slick keeps giving away to support downtown. These big business's don't pay taxes but we have to make up for the lost tax revenue from these business's. Why is this so hard for people to understand. The rich keep getting richer................

  17. Dan Coffey is the biggest gadfly Kansas City has seen in the last 40 years. KCMO needs to amend its rules to make it much more difficult to get something on the ballot. Currently, all it takes is 3,400 signatures. KCMO blows a bunch of extra money on elections because douchebags like Coffey have nothing better to do than oppose projects that would benefit Kansas City.
