The SM School District educates children for $8600 apiece. Believe it or not, that is a bargain. In Garden City, KS, the state allocates almost $12000 per pupil for a mediocre job. Can either district take a cut? I don't know about Garden City, but I don't think Shawnee Mission should. They are delivering a good product at a very good price. I know that the residents would approve a tax increase to make up the difference, but unfortunately the Supreme Court in Kansas has decreed that we cannot do that. Everybody has to be terrible, that is only fair.

ReplyDeleteGive me 30 minutes in the offices of SMSD and I could do a lot of cutting of the budget that does not in any way effect the class room education side of the matter. But that's another whole story.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I am told by teachers I know a lot of outlining school dist have to pay higher salaries to get teachers to live in the smaller towns plus a smaller school district does not always mean it's cheaper to run. If the kids in Garden City are to have all the same nice things that SMSD kids do it's easy to see that cost per child is going to be higher. Plus Garden City is a lower income area compared to the SMSD, so I am sure the state has to kick in more money to cover the loss for the kids on state aid that you don't see as much of in SMSD.
Let's take the Garden City example. I guarantee a significant part of higher costs are educating immigrants and the extra expenses they incur. ESL and the like. Dave is correct in that they have to pay well to entice people to live in that shit hole. That said, people bitch about immigrants yet there they are in Western Kansas, hired by the thousands by companies who want their cheap labor and contribute to the Republicans that run this state to keep them here. Yet nobody says shit about Republicans, it's all Obama's fault.
