Our fault . . . Is "Piercing Cultural Whiteness" new or even remotely unique ? I think not. European Culture has been pierced to the point of being perforated.The film Hidden Figures is a perfect example.Three Black Women are substituted for the one White Woman that actually assisted NASA by doing the more simple math that the engineers had long left behind. Like the magic Black rocket scientist portrayed by Morgan Freeman in October Sky, some endeavors (like space exploration) are just "too White".In a way, White Culture holds a mirror up to the rest of the world. When the non-white world doesn't like what it sees, such "art" is often the result.

ReplyDeleteOne day far in the future there will be many books and essays written about the massive cultural insecurity felt by non-Westerners in the face of Western (not necessarily white) achievement. That's really the message of all this reactionary art--no identity of its own, except in relationship to the percieved oppression.

Willful blindness @8:50. Ancient Egyptians (Egypt is located in Africa) were building the pyramids when white folk in Europe were still cave dwellers. Progress is cyclical (look at China for an example, which has been a dominant power, then a poverty stricken basket case, and is now once again emerging as a dominant power), white folks don't have a monopoly on it, same as all other people.

DeleteAgreed, progress is cyclical. But we're talking about a whole field of 'art' that only exists in opposition to, critique of, or comment on Western Civ.
The obsession with race on the part of these people is highly defensive and completely telling. It's really about a Western Civilization that begins in Greece and is essentially continuous. Not necessarily 'white'. A problematic label anyway given the huge cultural diversity among Europeans.
They are not producing an original art. They are a parody of it. Pygmies uncomfotable with their perch on the giant.
I might add that this 'art' is wholly personal and narcissistic. It's selfies forever.
