KANSAS CITY MONDAY MLK QUESTION: ARE TAXPAYERS RACIST IF THEY DON'T SUPPORT 1/8TH CENT URBAN CORE SALES TAX???

The legacy of MLK is about mutual respect, social justice, Christian values helping to uplift people beyond petty bigotry or demographic discrimination . . . But it's also about money.

Because everything is about money.

To wit . . .

THE KANSAS CITY ONE EIGHTH CENT SALES TAX INITIATIVE INSPIRES HOPE BUT FAILS TO OFFER MANY DETAILS ABOUT HOW THIS CASH WILL HELP TO CREATE JOBS AND SPARK THE ECONOMIC GROWTH PROMISED BY PROMOTERS!!!

Once again it's another blank check . . . This time by the clergy and activists instead of politicos and lawyers.

Take a look at a recent flier circulating and their FB page deets that seem appropriate to share on MLK day given the urban core focus of this taxing effort .  . .

The deets are scarce for potential voters . . . Here's the text of the ballot initiative . . .

Our Mission: To create a funding source for community and economic development east of Troost Avenue

Question: How does this tax differ from any other tax proposed for the City?

Answer: All taxes have a particular focus as found with some of the examples as the Zoo Tax, COMBAT Drug Tax, Public Safety Tax and Sports Complex. The focus of this tax is to continue the redevelopment of the urban core East of Troost Avenue and similar to what has taken place Downtown, Crossroads and other areas.

Question: How does this tax benefit me?

Answer: This tax benefits the entire City by stabilizing neighborhoods and communities through major redevelopment. On an individual basis, Kansas City can become a more vibrant, productive and safer area on the eastside of the city. What happens in one part of the City effects the entire City from the perspective of feeling safe, shopping and deciding to move to the area.

Question: Who is supporting the tax already?

Answer: Groups already supporting this initiative include Urban Summit, Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater KC (SCLC-GKC), National Black United Front (NBUF), Baptist Ministers Union, Neighborhood Groups within the Corridor

Respectfully . . .

THE 'WHAT' AND 'WHY' ARE THERE BUT NOT MUCH ELSE . . . THE REAL QUESTION HERE IS  WHO IS GOING TO BE IN CHARGE OF THIS CASH AND HOW WILL IT BE SPENT TO SPARK ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT?!?!

As usual, the devil is in the deets and the plan is pretty much secret.

Don't get it twisted . . . Helping a beleaguered part of of Kansas City is a great idea but a collection of Revs and activists don't have any experience or track record when it comes to job creation — The cornerstone of a real, meaningful economic development effort.

Voters of every ethnic, racial and religious persuasion should realize that without more specifics and a real plan . . . This is just another KCMO slush fund of cash that will go down the drain and have little benefit for the constituents it seeks to help.

The ask is understandable . . . Kansas City is currently burning money in the P&L District and on luxury living space Downtown so civic leaders have no real moral clarity to deny this kind of effort.

Still, at the end of the day taxpayers of all every economic, social and racial persuasion would do well to oppose even higher taxes whether those funds support corporate welfare OR a small clique of politically connected activists. It may not be inspiring or uplifting but EVERYBODY HATES TAXES and that's as good of a place as any to find some common ground.

You decide . . .

Comments

  1. high taxes drive away businesses and customers.

KC's cost of living continues to rise, that'll be the undoing of all the so-called progress for downtown.

  2. Brilliant idea!

Have the poor pay for their own redevelopment.

Sales taxes are the most regressive taxes.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Downtown property values and property taxes keep being lowered and have been for the past four years.

Incredible they get away with this but your average KCMO Joe who doesn't live downtown doesn't spend much time investigating property values and tax rates.

  8. Opposition to this tax should come from within inside the taxing district, too. They're literally strangling their own people for more money. Unbelievable.

  9. Don't forget this brilliant intellectual pile of garbage uttered by the failing Mayor early last year.

  11. "more vibrant"??? LOLOL!

I drive from the Northland to the VA Hospital at 38th & Linwood for the occasional check-up. From the busy traffic of White and Asian people going to work and actually accomplishing things downtown -- it immediately becomes still and quiet once crossing Troost.

other than the occasional group of black guys passing around the crack pipe on somebody's porch -- all is still..the only movement being the welfare queens checking their mailboxes for the latest handout. Why work when you can get "free stuff"?

    Vote NO -- another Demo-scam.

  12. James Tindal, Clinton Adams, Gwen Grant, Jim Nunnelly, Kiki Curls, Gayle Holiday, and the worthless Bland brothers STOP IT! GOD Damn,JUST STOP IT! YOU HAVE TO GET A REAL JOB TO GET MONEY!!

TO THE REST OF THE CITY this is a perfect example of stupid people stealing money. Of course a "NO" vote is an honest vote.

  13. Core area tax is racist in itself. We shouldn't be wasting millions trying to improve KC. We should be spending those millions dispersing the city population, thinning out the boon thugs and raising a city that is incapable of managing itself without mooching and picking pockets into suburbs and those in counties who could care less about KC. KC is a burden on our part of the world and for what it brings to the party the worlds would be better off if it was unincorporated and leveled.

  15. All of the supporters are from the same group going by different names. I noticed that they did not list any specific neighborhood organization supporting this. It is NOT the job of government to fund development and the sales tax initiative should easily be defeated. Although I live East of Troost, I do not support this tax. In large part, I do not support this tax because the resources will likely be funneled through this group and they are not development experts nor do I trust them with access to that much cash. There are other methods available to fund development done by skilled professionals. This is a money grab...once again by the usual suspects. It's not racist to tell those people that they should find other means of gainful employment. Suckling the public teat is not among the available options.

Whenever we get a job on the East Side, we insist that people get out of bed and let us in at 8AM or we won't show up. They are asleep anyway, but usually they let us in after we pound on the door relentlessly. It is quiet as a tomb until around 1PM. Then you hear cars starting and people getting up and around. We always make sure we are gone by 3PM no matter what and usually we try to be gone and off to another job by noon.

There is NOTHING going on before noon.

  20. Here comes February. An entire month of forced worship dedicated to the very people who ruin everything they touch with violence, lies and intimidation, aided and abetted by the lies from the Media, the lies from our politicians, the lies from our professors, the lies from Hollywood and the lies from every sickening liberal in America.

Speaking of lies, we should include the lies about "Hidden Figures". No doubt, required viewing in colleges everywhere now, here is the truth.

  21. If Martin Luther King were still alive or resurrected he would be the most pissed off black man walking the earth. He would look at how the race and so called racist card is thrown around and would give a sermon that would have steam blowing out his ears he'd be so hot about how events have spiraled downhill from his dream. I promise you this, he would denounce anything related to the so called BLM movement.

  22. Hell naw it's not racist to not support the urban core tax hike. Everything that gets done in this city involves a tax hike. And I, for one, ain't supporting/voting for SHIT that has a tax hike associated with it.
