  5. The corporate welfare plan granted included $84 million in tax dollars the company will not have to pay. Assistant City Manager Bob Langenkamp explained that the project is eligible for the sales tax exemption because the Chapter 100 financing will technically make the city the owner of the new buildings, which will be leased to the developers and subleased to Burns & McDonnell until the bonds are paid off.

Greg Graves, recently retired Burns and McDonnell CEO, publicly stated long before construction of the HQ expansion began, that the company had no intention whatsoever to relocate from their existing SKC location.
“We love it here in Kansas City and I have no intention of using Border War tactics for this or any of our future space needs."---Greg Graves, CEO Burns and McDonnell

Burns and McDonnell is a wealthy, growing, employee-owned company where average compensation is expected to be $126,000/year for employees in the new subsidized structures.

If these 267 Burns and McDonnell employees are representative of the company workforce, in regards to residence, we can say that 12 percent of Burns and McDonnell employees actually reside within KCMO. The lesson from this exercise, is that non-KCMO residents seem to be exerting considerable political influence over KCMO policy makers by exchanging campaign cash for a diversion of their tax responsibility. Those entrusted to fairly represent taxpayers, are instead, violating this trust and picking winners and losers.

THAT MEANS THAT KCMO DIDN'T NEED TO OFFER THEM ANY INCENTIVES TO STAY AND EXPAND THEIR CURRENT HEADQUARTERS!
