Mayor Sly hasn't made very much news lately despite a few high profile appearances for anti-crime groups and more development schemes.
For the remainder of the year the Mayor has a tough job in championing more than a few unpopular projects . . .
- The ongoing push for the new airport . . .
- Toy train streetcar extension . . .
- More taxes in the form of a BILLION DOLLAR bond issue vote . . .
Quick question for those who haven't left the office yet . . .
IS MAYOR SLY STILL POPULAR ENOUGH TO PUSH THROUGH THE FINAL PIECES OF HIS DEVELOPMENT AGENDA!!!
We'll stipulate that he's unbeatable against any opponent in KCMO . . . But separating people from their wallets might be another question altogether.

ReplyDeleteSly is made to feel popular by the increasingly large gang of groupies he hires on staff and by the folks he shovels large amounts of tax money to for consulting, eco devo, and pet projects.
ReplyDeleteAnd since most of the residents of KCMO don't really pay much attention to what's going on, buy into the empty hype that constantly emanates from city hall, and certainly rarely take the time to vote in municipal elections, he glides along like the emperor who has no clothes.
Meanwhile, the rest of the 84% of metro residents who have the very good fortune NOT to live in KCMO watch the show, laugh, and congratulate themselves on their very good decision as to what community they chose.
Just keep paying those water and sewer bills suckers.

Besides the streetcar that is going to cost the City $10 million each year forever, checkout some of Sly’s other accomplishments:
ReplyDelete-Change in average monthly household water/sewer bills: $65 in 2011-12 vs. $102 in 2015-16 and $110 projected in 2016-17.
- Total public safety spending (police, fire, municipal court): $338 million in 2010-11 vs. $399 million in 2015-16 and $413 million projected in 2016-17. (most all of that goes to the over staffed fire dept)
- Total economic development tax increment financing and subsidies: $62 million in 2010-11 vs. $75 million in 2015-16 and projected $83 million in 2016-17.

ReplyDeleteSlyme is an embarrassment to KC, always clowning for the camera despite driving the city into financial ruin. Like a bratty teen with mom and dad's charge card, he spends millions on shiny new toys while the city's infrastructure is a mess.

ReplyDeleteFortunately for the hapless citizens, the Obese Bowtie seems to be term limited. So, after a few more years of piling on billions of dollars of municipal debt, he will be gone and we will be left to pay back the money he borrowed for which we received little or nothing of value :( Fewer cops, more pot hole pocketed, unrepaired streets, a streetcar to nowhere and if he gets his way, a new airport built from the ground up that most people dont want and most people cant afford to pay for. I'd hazard a guess that municipal salaries and pensions have gone up, the consultants continue to bleed the city dry and the city is even further behind with the essential but unglamorous and mundane task of picking up the garbage and plowing the roads in a timely way. Even 4 years of The Gruesome Two, Gloria Squitiro and Mark Funkhouser didnt leave us with this kind of economic mess.
