Relatives of an alleged robbery suspect gunned down during a scary altercation at the Shawnee Walmart didn't make any excuses for his behavior. Instead their vigil seemingly hoped to address the rising tide of violence in the suburbs and across the nation. Their efforts were met with angry counter-protesters.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr wanted people judged on the content of their character. Well, this guy had a felony record, and his Facebook page lists "laying pipe" as his occupation. What a classy guy he was. Perhaps the good people of Shawnee think the family should have had their candlelight vigil in their own home instead of in the spot where the felon died. "Hey look, 8 kiddies, there's the exact spot where your drug-dealing sperm donor procreator met his maker". Seems like the family are just a little too much of a media whore. There should be more coverage on the injuries of Good Samaritan #1, whose cheekbone and left nostril were blown off by the perp. Good Samaritan #1 faces many more reconstructive surgeries in his future. There's a GoFundMe page for Good Samaritan #1, that is where the good people of Shawnee are directing their time and resources. And for the sister of the dead perp to say, "it was the drugs, he was going to rehab, he had prayed"......yeah, right. Her enabling/excuses explains a lot.

ReplyDeleteVigils should be banned - period. They do no good and only serve to either re-victimize the family and friends OR encourage more threats and violence. If citizens, family members, and "activists" (several locals who are convicted felons, BTW) really want to make a difference and see true change then start at home, become involved in your kids'/grandkids' school, be a presence in neighborhood and community cleanups and safety initiatives. If you see something, say something...even if it's within your own home and circle of friends. And please, everyone, stop seeing EVERYTHING in black and white. It's unproductive, annoying, and hinders any possible progress in addressing the explosive rise in local violent crime.
