Call for Artists, Activists, Change-Makers, and Friends...

Seeking individuals to participate in a community art project led by Kansas City artists SoniƩ Ruffin and Arzie Umali.

Common Threads: Anatomy of the Wound

Recent violence in this world has wounded us. We are hurting. We are in pain. We need to heal. Join us in art-making to transform the hurt and the pain. Art can help heal the wound.

What to submit:

A 14” X 14” TEXTILE SQUARE IN WHICH THE IMAGERY REPRESENTS THE ANATOMY OF YOUR WOUND.

Packets of fabric will be provided to all participants. You are welcome to freely express yourself by using these materials and by adding your own. Stitch, paint, draw, collage, write, cut, paste, embellish... Your art piece is about you, your wound, and your healing. The common thread connecting all pieces will be a RED HEART (provided in each packet) that we ask you to incorporate into your piece. All finished pieces will be included in an art installation and exhibited at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center.

The exhibit:

LEEDY-VOULKOS ART CENTER, 2012 Baltimore Ave, Kansas City, MO 64108
EXHIBIT DATES: FRI, SEPT. 2 – SAT, OCT. 29, 2016

***FIRST FRIDAY OPENINGS: SEPT. 2 & OCT. 7***

  3. If that's an example of what is to be...no. It is just about the two and the others along the side somewhere and a chance to meet and greet and say you had your work at Leedy-Volkous...not bad. Give it a go. As for me, no. Good luck with the project. Sounds empowering. So truthful. Common thread...just not for me.

  6. This just shows how much artists are out of touch with regular people.

  8. This will never work in the KC metro. You couldn't get most of the injured fat asses on anything smaller than a garrison flag.

  9. It will do just fine. The sewing is well done and more likely as panels to form a quilt. Nice idea. There will be a good turn out. Pain is pain.

  10. They'll make money. It is okay. Heal your pain through art. We need this KC.
