Celebrate Crosby Kemper III: Kansas City's Tax Fighter And Toy Train Streetcar Hater

Local media loves rich dudes but for the most part we're unimpressed with this cowtown fortunate son other than his EPIC MONEY QUOTE on the streetcar which claimed the TDD election was "The single-most undemocratic election in Kansas City since the Pendergast era."

  3. KCUR link to interview isn't working. Too bad, as I'd like to listen to that.

Yes, Mr. Kemper is from one of KC's most well-known families, and I don't hold that against him as it's nothing he should feel bad about, on the contrary he should be proud of his lineage.

His banking family has been a successful conservative private/public shareholder enterprise, operating within the regulatory framework imposed upon it by government.

When Mr. Kemper speaks out against projects such as the convention center hotel, streetcar, etc., as relying unfairly upon coerced taxpayer support instead of the private developer/investor model, it's in part because of his family background that I pay even more attention to his opinion. If he was just another well-to-do individual looking to make more money for himself, he wouldn't be bucking the KCMO business establishment which loves the current formula of generous tax breaks/incentives for nearly any new proposal.

And besides all that, if you don't respect a truly intelligent, modest, and capable public servant (KC Public Library Director), then you likely don't respect much in life. Crosby Kemper is a classic, and sadly we don't see too many of those in public roles anymore.

  5. when was the last time anyone heard of one of the Kemper"s getting busted for drugs or in any kind of a scandel? The old man raised them right, they are a family Kansas City should be proud of. Like the man said they could have taken the money and run and said screw this town. He should be on Ruckus more often just to keep Mike Shannon and rest of those Red Necks stright.

  6. Never met the man, but he seems like a stand up guy. Very much an intellectual and a good friend to Sinquefield. I think I'd rather have him as a friend than an enemy, rather foe. I'd have my work cut out for me. Vibrant, intriguing, colorful family history. That was just a tiny glimpse into the family tree that probably reaches epic proportions. Past and present. Good interview. Poignant questions. Draws one in and kept the listener involved. I could see it all with my ears. To have led such a life, the willingness to admit both good and bad.. Humble indeed.

  10. Absolutely. All day. All night. You can't handle the truth. I am KC. I've always enjoyed books. I am a bibliophile. Holding that Lindisforme did it for me. Time? Day? Cat got your tongue?

  11. Anyway, be respectful. It was a good show. Mr. Kemper is smart loved his wife and family. Cares about this city. Helping kids read is what he's about. Nice story. I hope they get more money.

  12. For the libraries to help kids, teens, adults look for work or use the internet. Get some new books. The shelves are empty. I can't stand it. Hardly anything new to read. Not everything need be digital. Anyway you shift them, the shelves are bare. Please stop taking library book money.. There's hardly much to check out. Not everybody has iPads and computers at home.

  13. Crosby would make one of the best Mayors Kansas City would ever have.

  14. If that's what he chooses to do. Why be the featherhead when you can control the outcome of the players? Jeff City, DC, the sky is the limit. He isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. What's his angle being so kind? Why is Crosby so great a man?

  15. He's changed my life for the better. He's my inspiration. He's made me a better person. Thank you, Crosby. Kansas City feels that way too.

  16. 5:20: What planet are you on? Have you been to a library recently? The shelves are full of books as well as CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, magazines, newspapers, and just about anything you could want. And if they don't have what you want, you can go online and order it if it's in the system (or if you really want something they don't have, there's always interlibrary loan).

Wake up and smell the coffee, girl!
