Last week there was chaos along Main Street with multiple robberies and gunpoint threats until police intervened.
However . . .
THIS WEEKEND WE'RE HEARING THAT THE GUNPOINT STICK-UPS TARGETING PEDESTRIANS ARE MOVING WEST ALONG THE PERIPHERY OF MORE POPULATED KANSAS CITY ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICTS!!!
Translation: Emboldened crooks driving through Midtown are targeting people walking in Westport, The Plaza and pushing across the east side of Main Street.
A note sent our way this morning:
"TKC, just wanted to let you know that a friend of mine was beaten and robbed this week in Westport and now he swears he's leaving the city and never coming back. A group of guys who happened to be black pulled up next to him as he head headed home and aimed their guns right at him in the middle of the street. They robbed him but what pissed him off even more is that they beat the sh*t out of him after he quickly handed over his wallet. They pistol whipped him and repeatedly kicked him after he was already on the ground. Mind you, these were older guys. Not the "flash mobs" you talk about but grown up men driving around with guns harassing and robbing people. I know they're around here because the exact same thing almost happened to me. Luckily I was on my bike and saw them coming. They didn't have a chance to get to me because I wasn't going to wait around to see what they wanted. As a woman who bikes and walk in Midtown, I can't afford to be as friendly as some of my friends.
I'm only writing this to you in order to warn other people. Yes, Westport is getting more dangerous but that always happens during the Summer. People might want to stop thinking of this as a small town and avoid making eye contact with strangers, do not respond and run from people pulling up to you in car, especially at night. And just stay on your guard. I wanted to call an ambulance for my friend but he refused. However, I did encourage him to file a police report and the response we got was good. The bad thing is, I doubt it matters to my friend and he's already making plans to leave KC for some place that where he feels safe to walk at night."

Again, this weekend there were 15 instances of Kansas City violence over the weekend and we've CONFIRMED that Midtown has endured more than its fair share of problems . . .
THERE'S WORD OF NEARLY HALF-A-DOZEN ROLLING DRIVE-BY ROBBERIES GUN POINT THREATS TARGETING PEDESTRIANS IN MIDTOWN KANSAS CITY.
This reality check is important because Bike/Walk advocates and lobbyists like to pretend that crowded streets and commuting is the real danger to pedestrians and cyclists when in reality these denizens inside the Midtown Corridor are mostly threatened by violent crime just like everybody else.

There are fewer officers on the streets now
Those officers are overworked
Support staff has been dramatically cut back
The north land is making up for skyrocketing demand during peek hours on the south side of the city.
A lot of people act like they're nothing they can do but this is the time when people have to remember that Sly and the council keep cutting police budgets. That's the real debate we need to be having.
The PD budget didn't get cut though. It grew, as it has every year in recent memory. Unfortunately, the PD chooses to squander those extra resources on take home-patrol cars, and desk staff.
