TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! AMID BAD POLLING AND PETITION OPPOSITION: MAYOR SLY AND NEW KANSAS CITY SINGLE-TERMINAL AIRPORT EFFORT CRASH AND BURN!!!

The mayor is walking into a press conference right now but our blog community already knows what he's gonna say . . .

THIS AFTERNOON KANSAS CITY MAYOR SLY ADMITS THAT HE'S GOING TO WAIT ON THE AIRPORT FOR NOW!!!

Two for Tuesday . . .

CITIZENS FOR RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT PETITIONER DAN COFFEY CALLED IT!!! MASSIVE VOTER OPPOSITION AND HORRIBLE POLLING IS THE REASON BEHIND THE TACIT ADMISSION OF DEFEAT FROM MAYOR SLY!!!

Quick talk with Mr. Coffey in order to get his thoughts on this one.

A statement Mr. Coffey is optimistic and right on the money: "This is a strong indication that, at the end of the day, the real power is with the people. When we first launched our voter petition in order to guarantee that the public would be allowed to vote on this issue, there were times when I doubted that elected officials would let us have our say. But this announcement is a great sign that if people speak up, vote, and talk about the issues that are important to them . . . They can impact the process and create change."

More deets . . .

THE BEHIND THE SCENES ON THIS THING IS THAT ROBO-CALL POLLING DATA REVEALED WIDESPREAD OPPOSITION FROM KANSAS CITY RESIDENTS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPOSSIBLE TO CHANGE!!!

Word is the phone poll was something like 15 minutes long so the people who did bother to answer the questions were obviously pissed.

More . . .

Mayor Sly is talking a good game about how Kansas City is "not ready" for the single-terminal scheme and the cost of a campaign but there's no way around the fact that the opposition to this scheme was simply too great, the proponents far too arrogant and deets were far too scant.

You decide . . .

  3. Thank God!

Mr. Mayor work on getting water and sewer rates under control. We're not funding anymore unplanned, unnecessary development schemes. Can I please just get my trashed picked up on a regular and consistent basis?

    Sincerely,

    Taxpayer Turd District

  4. Does this mean that we won't be getting a new Chipotle inside the airport?

  5. He'll wait until Trump is off the ballot and then he's gonna move forward on streetcar expansion to UMKC.

  6. Still using the same techniques to win friends and influence people as you did in high school, Tony?

    And about the same outcome.

    Good luck with that.

  8. Like modern buses were not permitted into the Trolley agenda, renovation will not be permitted into the conversation with the airport!

  9. How do you not see this as a defeat?

The mayor is showing that he needs to have the prescription on his glasses checked! This is absolutely a defeat for the new airport and for him. He should listen to voters more often.

  11. Pay Attention Hipsters and Frostys

KCI has consistently ranked in the top-five airports in the North America Airport Satisfaction Study by J. D. Power and Associates. In February 2010 the airport was the highest-rated medium-sized airport receiving five stars in all categories. In February 2008, U.S. News & World Report ranked the airport the "third least miserable airport" in the U.S., based on the 47 busiest airports in the country.

    DEAL WITH IT

  12. I guess we need to give credit to the mayor for seeing the writing on the wall. No matter how you slice it, there was no way to push this airport through. He saw that he couldn't get it done and then adjusted. It's a loss but he's doing it the right week; now he can get on to the streetcar extension.

  14. This is probably a win for the consulting crowd. More wait = more studies = more fees.

While I am not opposed to a new KCI airport mostly it is because the age of the present airport not the design. A new airport would or could incorporate more amenities and modern conveniences while doing some fixing of the security issue that was not even on Osama Bin Laden's mind in the 1970's.
However I am not in favor of the "S'lie James Mem-horrible Kansas City Airport" because it is happening too fast and with made up costs.
There needs to be a process that at least seems to be a reasonable solution to the aging of KCI and a senseable replacement.

Memo to the Obese Bowtie... This is not a delay but a defeat, you fat, banana eating scotch swilling monkey! You wanted the single terminal but no matter how hard you tried, how devious you are and despite your hands over the levers of government you just couldnt get this done. May your legacy start out with a discussion of how the will of the general public stopped you from foisting this expensive boondoggle upon all of us. I'm sure if you could have figured out a way to create a special taxing district that would have included only your own home, you would have done it and stuffed this project down all of our throats. But you cant... For this we all should be greatful to Tony Botello Blogger King, several council people, even the usually feckless Dan Cofran and of course the average citizen who took the time to alert the powers that be that they were mad as hell and didnt want this shoved up the municipal rear end. Ta ta Bowtie... we hate to see you lose one... NOT!!

  18. This probably isn't over and a secret deal will be done where the contracts will get signed without oversight or a vote. It could even be pushed via Port KC.

Another loser here is that once well regarded Lion of the Press, Yael T Abouhalkah. Down you go, you irrelevant peanut vendor. Along with Sly, i can envision the two of your being flushed down the municipal drain. Hopefully that drain is still working, not one of the defective, non working drains caused by decades of neglect by people like Mayor Barnes and Mayor Manny C and civic opinion shapers such as the kind of person you used to be. What say you, Yael T Abouhalkah? Unlike your blog, TKC allows anyone to post a reply wothout being censored. We'd sure like to hear from you Abooboo!!!

  20. I am so happy!

    Tony,
Weren't there bonds that the city was going to issue to help pay for this project? Do you have any links
    Thanks!

    Happy happy joy joy!

  21. But the CUCKOLDS at 610 sports talk radio say that this is a huge mistake, and they were right about the Mizzou protest issue so I reckon they're right about this too.

  22. What a sore loser...so evident in the words and expressions from the Sly guy on TV5 @ 5p & 6p today. He all but said--

this is only a temporary delay,

    the opposition is strictly imbeciles,

the mighty mayor is of supreme intellect,

and guaranteed he'll be back with a vengeance to win this pet project.

Yeah, he's real gracious to the constituency while trying to save face.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Black led cites are always the best run cities so we should all just do what Sly says.

    ReplyDelete
  24. We might think (maybe hope is the better word) that such strong public sentiment about a proposal would make the electeds at least consider taking the course of actually being straight with the public and working to make it rise or fall on its own merits.
But like the scorpion and the frog, KCMO city government just can't help itself and is much more likely to head for behind closed doors, try to find some clever attorneys, twist and stretch existing development statutes to offer some cover, and engage sleazeballs like the Glorioso crowd into yet another phony campaign to convince residents that chicken crap is actually chicken salad.
Sly and the gang have spent lots of money on consultants and the construction unions, engineering firms, and companies like Dunn have been drooling over the airport for years.
Sly in a corner with many promises to keep and his political dreams swirling in his head is unlikely to be a pretty sight.
After shaking hands, be sure to count your fingers.

  25. Channel 5's Josh Marshall was made to parrot for the gotta haves talking point on the great big missed opportunities on denying that James gang their Yellow Brick Road. He echoed the Chamber (who else?), admonishing this rebuild denial will cost KC $37 MILLION a year!!!!!!!
    Suuuuure.

    Then, standing in MCI,
    Jonathan Carter tossed out
    (with a straight face, no
    less) that "most" agree with
    what the mayor is saying.

Manipulated media, ya think? I heard Sly say on Ch. 5 that
    KC doesn't have the 2 to 3
million dollars for a media campaign to get the corrected information out to the public. Just calling CFRG, & others LIARS!

  26. The efforts for the airport might be better focused on affordable housing, schools and basic city services, according to recent polling. More veteran homes are needed than what will fill that tiny house town at 89th & Troost. That project is great, don't misunderstand. Dunn would do well with another St. Michael's styled campus adding some townhomes/duplexes for couples, and single (not so tiny, just sensible) homes near appropriate amenities for seniors. Central or any district in KCK and north JoCo need this sooner, not later.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh it isn't a defeat he is just waiting till all you taxpayers are asleep and he will jam some emergency thing or another passing the new airport without any voters having a say.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Maybe we are finally getting to the point where the feds are threatening to walk Sly out of City Hall in handcuffs. Maybe all the City Hall crooks will take the walk of shame. I can't wait!
