ReplyDeleteNo money of his own, which is par for the course, and each idea has gotten more ridiculous over the decade or so he has been working on this "project".
The never ending dialing for taxpayer dollars and rolling through the aquarium proposal and now apartments ON TOP of a WalMart big box and throwing in a hotel in a desperate attempt at making this farce a regional attraction which might qualify for STAR bonds from the state.
And all in Mission, Kansas!

it's hard to figure out if the developer can't pull it off or if out-of-town investors and stores are looking at the location and not appreciating its potential because they're focusing on the nearby demographics only.
ReplyDeleteit used to be and could be again a great site for destination shopping and restaurant dining. mid-luxury lodging would work well, too.
what the out-of-towners are missing or what the developer hasn't sold is that the site is perfect to garner business from the fourth wealthiest community in the usa and adjoining upper middle class areas, not just the middle class area right around the site. mission hills, fairway, and prairie village folks regularly frequented mission mall as an alternative to other options.
for example, a marriott courtyard or hilton garden inn with prices below those of plaza hotels.....and easier parking!..... would appeal to savvy business travelers and especially family tourism. along side such lodging, a couple of restaurants that appeal to families and young professionals, say an ethnic restaurant and a sports bar, would work, too, imho.
my opinion is that a down scale development might ghetto-ize mission. an upscale plan would bring it back in all probability from its present limbo.

ReplyDeleteThere was a perfectly good little shopping center there doing just that, and some idiots got the idiotic idea to tear it all down to rebuild the same thing back in its place. Mission got greedy and showed everyone how their city government is as fucked up as Kansas City is.
How much income for the city has the vacant field generated as opposed to having left Mission Mall alone?
