The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund is a staple tradition in Kansas City that dates back to the 19th century when Mayor George Shelley bought a Christmas Tree and prepared baskets and meals for the poor with his own money. Since then, The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund has become a symbol of generosity that is indicative of the philanthropic spirit of all Kansas Citians.
The most visible symbol of The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund is the 100-foot Douglas Fir Christmas Tree that is erected at Crown Center Square. The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place, annually, the day after Thanksgiving and features a citizen that represents the best of KC. The lighting ceremony also features musical performances and a spectacular fireworks show.
The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund benefits senior citizens, persons with disabilities and children every year with gift cards, Christmas gifts and holiday parties that are hosted by the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department at various community centers all across our community. The mission of The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund is to provide assistance to underprivileged families in Kansas City in an efficient and honorable manner that will enhance their enjoyment of the holiday season.
