Coming Soon: Talking Kansas City Cronyism

Mixed feelings about this one that I'd like to share . . .

First and foremost, we agree a lot with the guys at Show-Me because their libertarian viewpoint often aligns with our worldview that's mostly based on the greatest stoner movies throughout cinema history . . .

But let's be clear . . .

At the end of the day this is a group funded by trust fund dude Crosby Kemper III . . . And for all of Crosby's money and connections, he still has neither the influence nor the reach of our TKC blog community that is founded on FREE SPEECH and not one of the greatest family fortunes in Kansas City.

Don't get it twisted, K3 does great work and we like his choice in hats . . .

But our TKC blog community earned its place through a rabid, obsessive and sometimes self-destructive devotion to the Kansas City discourse . . . And making the distinction betwixt cronyism or nepotism from a banking family dude is a bit of hairsplitting that most po'folk pushed out Kansas City Democracy by corporate lackeys like Mayor Sly don't have the luxury of debating.

Still . . . For the criticism and consideration of our TKC blog community . . . Here's a look at an interesting upcoming conversation . . .

Cronyism: DC to KC

How to Create Opportunity for All and Favoritism to None

Next week on November 17, The Show-Me Institute is partnering with The Heritage Foundation and the Kansas Policy Institute to bring Kansas Citians a panel discussion on cronyism in government. We’ve all seen it: special deals for the well-connected that are not available to average taxpayers, though taxpayers must pay the cost of politicians’ generosity—often through funding reductions for schools and libraries.

Genevieve Wood, Senior Fellow at The Heritage Foundation and Senior Contributor at The Daily Signal
Dave Trabert, President at Kansas Policy Institute
Patrick Tuohey, Field Manager at The Show Me Institute
Steve Vockrodt, Staff Writer at The Pitch

Moderated by:

Dave Helling, Columnist at the Kansas City Star

The panel will explore the topic of cronyism, and why the government should enact economic policies that foster the common good of our nation, not the special interests of powerful lobbies. Government should promote opportunity for all and show favoritism to none, on both the national and local levels. The event organizers are The Heritage Foundation, the leading conservative research organization in Washington, D.C., The Show Me Institute, a nonpartisan research and educational organization dedicated to promoting free markets and individual liberty, and Kansas Policy Institute, an independent think-tank that advocates for free market solutions and the protection of personal freedom for all Kansans.

Tuesday, November 17, 2015
Event opens at 5:30pm, panel begins at 6pm.

  2. This should be good. At least they are talking about what's wrong with KC like the newspaper should be doing if they still had a newspaper worth reading.

  3. Interesting. I plan to be there.

  4. How can the Star talk about something that they are the beneficiaries of?

  5. One would think that you would have been invited given your REACH OR INFLUENCE.

You might think that someone who continues to live in their mom's house sans a job would not have an issue with humility.

    Certainly not with Tony.

So, there you go. Another hit. Woo, woo.

  6. There's a certain irony in a group funded by Mr. Kemper putting on a seminar raging against cronyism. Had his name not been Kemper, I'm sure the library would have found a different individual to lead them.

Don't get me wrong, I's sure the seminar will highlight many of the governance issues we now face, but there's definitely a little bit of "pot/kettle" going on here.

  9. This blog has more influence in this town than Crosby Kemper? You have got to be kidding.

  10. Who is this Kemper guy?

    Love the hat.

I like the cut of his jib!

  11. It is clear from TKC's comments that you don't know Crosby III or what he has done for our community and our public library.

  12. Cronyism isn't limited to the Government. Look into the big Foundations with trustees that pay themselves obscene amounts for meeting 4X year and use grant making as a slush fund for their pet interests. Start with the ones that have frequent turnover in leadership, it is usually an indication something is rotten inside.
