While shopping at ##########, I was followed, falsely accused of stealing, followed into the parking lot, recorded, and had the police called on me during a very busy First Friday event. I decided to wait for the police since I didn't steal anything; I didn't have anything to worry about. When they arrived, they found that I had been falsely accused. The owner never admitted to being wrong, even though her staff admitted to the fact that they didn't see me steal anything. The owner didn't apologize despite not finding any stolen merchandise.
They didn't see an highly educated, successful young professional and entrepreneur with a love for vintage shopping.
They saw a criminal.
And when evidence proved their perception wrong, they still saw me as a criminal.
This isn't the first time I've been followed while shopping. It's not a figment of my imagination. It doesn't matter how many advanced degrees I obtain, how well I dress, or what my professional title is. To some people, there's only one thing I will ever be...

ReplyDeleteThe insider should know that his or her appearance, number of advanced degrees and titles do not establish good character. The fact that he or she believes these superficial cloaks provide for esteemed character straights reveals this person to be an elitist. I think he or she should have been arrested or acosted for that, and that alone. Maybe that was the store owners complaint - that he or she was an arrogant asshole. Let's not always assume it's based in racial discrimination. While it's not illegal to bean elitist asshole, there is good cause to not want you around.
ReplyDeleteIt gets cold in the winter and hot in the summer. There are exceptions, but if you want to wear your fucking wool coat in the summer, go ahead and do it, but I will pay attention to the stereotype and the generalization, because that is how we live out lives.

Unfortunately, the business owner has probably learned from experience. Yes, minorities get targeted because the shop owner has watched them steal and shoplift. Sorry, but that is from experience. Does that mean that a blonde from Leawood won't steal from you? No, but the experience is that she won't. You watch teenage girls and blacks because in your experience, they are the ones who walk out with your stuff.

And I already have given them chance after chance after chance. They ALL ripped me off. So I cut them off years ago and my business is much more successful and stress free. If a coon calls, we just hang up. No explaination, they don't deserve one. They know why.

I see grocery store clerks not ringing up meats ,this must be pretty common practice in yhe ack community, since i see it often.
I agree 8:05pm. It's an odd story. This line is very confusing: "It doesn't matter how many advanced degrees I obtain, how well I dress or what my professional title is". As if a person, by looking at someone, could tell whether they had an advanced degree, or professional title or that their character could be readily identified by the way a person is dressed is absurd. There has to be more to this story because that statement was so far off base as to lose any credibility. Something doesn't add up.
