TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY PETITIONERS PROTEST 'INVALID' RULING AGAINST DOWNTOWN CONVENTION HOTEL PUBLIC VOTE AND PLEAD WITH COUNCIL FOR SUPPORT!!!

A group of Kansas City volunteers are taking their fight to the city council so that TENS OF MILLIONS worth of taxpayer subsidy are not awarded without a vote from the public.

To wit . . .

ADVOCATES AGAINST TAXPAYER FUNDING OF THE PLANNED DOWNTOWN CONVENTION HOTEL HOPE THE NEW COUNCIL WILL SUPPORT A CALL TO PUT MILLIONS WORTH OF SUBSIDY TO A VOTE IN ACCORDANCE WITH SIGNED PETITIONS FROM REGISTERED VOTERS!!!

While MSM mostly reports City Hall pressers aimed at convincing the public, our blog community wants to put this fight front and center in order to demonstrate the undemocratic way Mayor Sly and his supporters continue to do business on the public's dime.

You decide . . .

Citizens For Responsible Government: As you know our petition was overwhelming received by the voters . . .

The City Attorney has deemed our petition “invalid” we totally disagree. He states the ”petition cannot indirectly accomplish things the city council would be prohibited from directly accomplishing”.

Our petition does not ask the council to do anything you do not have the authority to do on a daily basis. We are asking you to repeal two ordinances, (which are not in the best interest of your constituents) and insert language to prevent a situation like we have now from occurring. The city has rushed some contracts through in an attempt to preclude our petition. It was underhanded and sneaky but these contracts have no bearing on our petition.

The contracts agreed to by the city and vendors should have “opt out” clauses written into them. Assuming the city used competent attorneys, the opt out clause should be in the contracts. Contracts are cancellable, contracts are not immortal.

We ask you do what you were elected to do by those you serve –that-is- to be good stewards of taxpayer funds.

Please consider ratifying our petition immediately or send it to the ballot for a public vote. Time is of the essence. We know you have 60 days but this should not take that long. There are those who will attempt to delay this process through any means available. Act swiftly but prudently.

The previous council passed these ordinances hours before the end of their term and have saddled you and the taxpayers with these unnecessary costs. This hotel project, as it is now, is against the voter’s wishes.

  1. That lady was right when she yelled to Mayor James that he was a dictator.

  2. They are redistributing wealth from the other hotel brands to the Hyatt. Sly James is a socialist. There is no other way to put it. I don't use the term socialist, lightly. But Sly James is a through and through socialist, that promotes socialist policies. It is a shame to see Kansas City devolve from an imperfect democracy and into the gallows of socialism.

  3. Underhanded? Sneaky? Who the fuck talks like that?

The Niggers for Responsible Niggerment do not speak for the voters.

  4. 12:09 Well they obviously speak for enough voters to meet the initiative requirement. So they speak for more voters than you, good sir.

  5. The petitioners should go back with an ordinance to place city council pay at $1 per year. That would get their attention.

  6. Vote no on the E Tax.

  7. If the hotel is such a good deal, why not let people vote on it? It may actually pass, and then no one would have a valid complaint.

  8. HOW DO YOU KNOW THE DOWNTOWN CONVENTION CENTER HOTEL PROJECT IS A RIGGED SCHEME?

Simple! It wouldn't have happened, but for one individual....Mike Burke. This tells you that this ill-conceived boondoggle required a political operative working with a cooperative business/political quorum to saddle the taxpayers with a project that no sane investor was willing to undertake.

Add to the equation the fact that Mike Burke was the challenger to Sylvester James' first successful Mayoral run, and both men have publicly stated that they agreed shortly after that election to proceed with the convention center hotel project, and you have the makings for an act of collusion working against the best interests of KCMO taxpayers.

Supporters like to tell the story that they tried for years, if not decades, to come up with an acceptable plan. They all failed. And the primary reason they failed is because it made no economic sense for private investors to put forth their money in such a project.

If you earn minimum wage, but have always wanted to reside in Mission Hills, no lending institution is going to finance your pipe-dream because it's not economically feasible. Those who behave foolishly with their finances will soon have no finances! But.....if you can squander other people's money, then why not get that Rolls Royce (or a ToyTrain!) for your commute back and forth to McDonald's.

  9. Will 800 rooms be filled daily? Let's get the hell out of Kansas City.

  10. Totally "unpredictable" tootooting ZOMG! TOY TRAIN! shreiker at 1:50.

New TKKKC record for most posts before one of the 'SMART"KC-ers piped in with unrelated toy train ranting at a WHOPPING 8 POSTS!

Maybe you guys should focus on that regional super-special awesome "thoroughly modern" bus plan you promised to deliver over a year ago instead of trolling a circle jerk blog for 6 malcontented 30-something white suburban losers all day...

  11. I guess KC's future economy should depend on the Shriners. At least that's the plan that Sly is selling us all.

  12. This is what happens when you take prayer out of the schools.

  13. In sum "Wahhh we don't want to invest one dime in Kansas City because we can't pay our taxes but we're sure as hell going to complain when no one moves here and call everyone else leeches..."

  14. Toot toot. He's baaaaaaaaaaaack! Clunk.

  15. Is it wrong to give away $35 million with no public accountability?

    Yes, yes it is.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Sly, Mike, and the usual insiders had this greased from the beginning and cleverly got contracts signed before the petitioners were able to get their signatures certified.
And the financial numbers for the hotel proposal will now get worse and worse for the taxpayers, who will never really learn the true details for years to come.
Too bad KCMO doesn't have an actual democratic city government.
Thanks for playing and be sure to renew the earnings tax as Glorioso's campaign will convince you to.

  17. Eileen Weir over in Independence is doing the same thing after a petition was gathered to stop a landfill

  18. Look. There's a principle to be maintained here. It's our job in city government to pull money from your pockets to give to our friends and backers. And it's the public's job to quietly allow it. Why do you think we went into government work?
