SHOCK!!! KANSAS CITY SCLC SUES POWERLESS CITY HALL AFTER MISSOURI MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE SMACK DOWN!!!

The fight over the Kansas City minimum wage is now headed to court.

Kansas City activists are waging a legal battle to keep hopes of a $15 minimum wage alive despite existing Missouri statutes that were recently affirmed by a majority of the Missouri General Assembly. Remember that Gov. Jay's recent veto of Missouri legislation was overridden by the NO VETO REPUBLICAN MISSOURI MAJORITY which pretty much killed any municipal attempt to legislate minimum wage increases throughout the state.

Here's the word . . .

KC minimum wage increase supporters sue to keep question on ballot

Deets:

“The General Assembly’s decision to override (Gov. Jay Nixon’s) veto of House Bill 722 was callous, coldhearted and insensitive to the pain and peril of the working poor who we as a faith-based entity represent,” said Vernon Howard, president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City. “It was a frontal attack upon the bedrock principle of democracy because it denies citizens of Kansas City the right to go to the ballot to empower themselves. We believe it was a breach of the right of the petitioners.”

On Monday, the SCLC of Greater Kansas City took legal action to keep a question on the city ballot asking voters whether they’d like to raise the wage. The group filed a lawsuit in Jackson County Circuit Court, Howard said, which would bar Kansas City from taking any action on the minimum wage question for now.

  1. How much is this going to cost KCMO? It should be immediately thrown out of court.

  2. TKC, you forgot about activist judges in kc who are all to happy to let criminals free and play policy maker too. The sad thing is that they don't face much scrutiny from the media or the public during elections.

  3. Let me see I have a business and I pay my employees. Some packs of hacks sue to force people who do not own my business to vote and decide what I can afford to pay them and no one sees anything wrong with this picture? What if those fast food workers were told they now have to pay thier baby sitters, lawn mowers, etc $15.00 and hour whether the like it, can afford it or not?

These fucking baboons that cook up this shit should take their legal money, open up a business in KC and show us all how the fuck it is supposed to be done 'cause these neanderthal fucks are on crack!

  10. "The city on Monday tried to get an order from the Jackson County Circuit Court to remove the petition initiative for a higher minimum wage. The city attorney’s office argues any Kansas City election on a higher minimum wage would be an exercise in futility because the Missouri General Assembly last week outlawed cities from adopting anything greater than the state-set $7.65 per hour.

The city said it needed a court decision urgently. If it fails to get the measure removed by Tuesday, the city could be on the hook to pay for the special November election, which could cost about $500,000."

No sweat. Just move $500,000 from the Kansas City Streetcar Authority Budget, recognizing an emergency and your set!

  11. So now the churches are getting into politics and deciding what laws are to be passed and what ones are not to be?

Till churches start paying taxes I say they need to stay out of any government processes.

Does SCLC out of the goodness of their hearts now pay all their employees 15 plus an hour?

  12. The bad news is rents will continue to go up for the next ten years. They better dig in for the long haul.

  13. What ever jurisdiction they sue should turn around and sue them for malicious prosecution and recover attorneys fees if that is allowable. This is a waste of taxpayer funds and a judge should dismiss it immediately.

But, they'll find some sympathetic judge that will let it run it's course and cost the taxpayers.....

  17. Is this the same Vernon Howard that ran the scam on Second Baptist Church then agreed to resign rather than be prosecuted. Is this the same Vernon Howard that parades his girlfriend around as his wife while his real wife was living in their home with no utilities. Is this the same Vernon Howard that stole the undetermined amount of money from the Miracle on 39th street fund purchasing gift cards from Home Depot to launder the stole money. Is the the same Vernon Howard that ran the same scam on a church in Arizona then came back here where they busted him stealing and screwing have the single women in the church. Oh yeah he had Dick issues at Second Baptist St. James and will probably have them at St. Mark's they got to be the dumbest bastards in the world to hire him as their pastor.

  18. Another fine example of the kind of leadership in the black community that has made the east side what it is today.
Another person who has no idea of the law or how things really work and who makes not the slightest effort to learn enough about something to be able to make any serious thoughtful proposals or recommendations.
Instead it's just the same old shakedowns, demands, marches, and threats. But this time he'snot working with the local cowards and it's really unlikely that the state legislators are going to fold.
Meanwhile, the black community is busy destroying itself with the highest number of murders in the city in years and these bozos are playing "look at me",pandering and making promises they can't possibly fulfill, and wasting other people's time and money.
It's really too bad that some serious adults can't step forward and provide some responsible leadership.
The many good folks who actually live on the east side desperately need it.

  23. Hey Sly, why don't you just up the poor wages for the employees of the city. Send a message. Just do it your self, then maybe others would be on board and not have to endure your stupid attempts to raise the wage thru frutile law changing and wasting so much city taxpayer money which could be spent on decent pay for the bull you make them do.
