WITNESS HYPOCRITICAL KANSAS CITY PROPERTY TAX ABATEMENT GIVEAWAY!!!

Take a look at this column calling out the recent Kansas City property tax giveaway spree that not only taxes cash away from important services but also prolongs the death spiral of the newspaper.

Here's Money Line:

"The same Star that just asked the City to excuse it from paying $10 million in property tax to the school district. Now that it has been exempted, it wonders if the tax rate should be increased for others.

"This would be humorous if it weren’t so sad. The Star is not alone; the city regularly abates property taxes in the name of economic development."

And that's pretty much the way the next 4 years will play out . . . Corporations and special interests are set to receive a litany of tax breaks while plebs and other po'folk will have their heart strings tugged to keep funding the political giveaway scheme.

Developing . . .

  1. Don't forget that the pot holes and street cover problem is getting worse TKC.

Look around midtown and most of the street is like a minefield. THAT is what you need to start covering.

  2. It's hilarious cheerleader Yael owns KCMO property, cheers on tax increases, yet somehow doesn't pay a penny of property tax on these parcels. Maybe he should give the public some tips on how to avoid paying property taxes.

  3. May I suggest contacting:

    Ryan Kimball
Assistant Treasurer & Director of Investor Relations
    916-321-1849
    rkimball@mcclatchy.com

Seems like a very decent gentleman, and is rather accessible. Don’t be surprised if he personally takes your call, or promptly responds. They can’t make changes at the Star if McClatchy doesn’t know how the customer feels. Do know that the customer is really the advertiser, but advertisers need/want readers. I don’t trust the Star is giving an honest assessment to McClatchy. Feel free to forward this article, or any others, or just let McClatchy know your opinion. I don’t think it would be very constructive to write a hateful tirade (even if it is warranted), but honest opinions can’t hurt.

  4. The economic development schemes have actually created more blight. When the market is overbuilt due to subsidies older real estate is devalued, often to the extent it becomes unprofitable. Owners let buildings deteriorate because rents won't support repairs. Entire buildings become vacant, foreclosures occur and the entire neighborhood suffers.

  5. This is why the school district as well as everything else is in such bad shape south of the river. When big businesses are exempt from paying revenue then the city is robbing itself of needed cash to fix things. Revenue from a big business is far great than the revenue collected from it employees.

  6. "[T]he city regularly abates property taxes in the name of economic development"? Yes, acting at the behest of the lifelong Black "give me my fair share" movement that results in perpetual foreclosure, boarding of houses, wasteful spending, permanently incomplete projects and destruction of neighborhoods. Hopefully, this new council won't do that.

  7. Interesting how the libtards hammer Sam Brownback over school cuts while KC not only screws the schools system out of millions it also drives up everyone else property taxes as they are forced to pick up the difference for these horse shit political tricks. Not a peep out of any of the mayors libtard friends about the shaft KC government is putting to it's own constituents.

  8. RE: Kansas City's Property Tax Abatement Problem By Patrick Tuohey

This is an excellent article, and I highly recommend reading it.

It begins, "Just the other day, an unsigned Kansas City Star editorial..." with an outstanding observation that the KC Star Editorial Board routinely hides behind their curtain, with the practice of not attributing authorship to printed articles.

"..the same Star that just asked the City to excuse it from paying $10 million in property tax to the school district." PRECISELY!! Hypocritical liberal tax-dodgers who are eager for others to pay their way.

"As a result of these abatements, schools, libraries, the county and programs that support mental health services and the zoo are being denied funds. As of 2013 the Kansas City school district suffered a $470,000,000 gap between the assessed value of real estate and the value at which it is taxed."

"City leaders who allow property owners to pay less than the full share of their tax may be the greatest obstacles to fully funded education. Are they really going to ask rank-and-file taxpayers to make up the difference?

Kansas City doesn't need a higher property tax rate, it needs to make sure more people are paying their fair share."

Mr. Tuohey, while stating simple facts that are quite obvious, stands head and shoulders above the intellectual level of both the KC Star Editorial Board and city leaders.
