Without an election slate to support him Mayor Sly is confronting increased demands from the City Council and their strident supporters.
To wit . . .
COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS ARE THE FIRST REAL CHALLENGE TO MAYOR SLY'S ADMINISTRATION AS SUPPORTERS OF COUNCILMAN JERMAINE REED DEMAND MORE INFLUENCE FOR THE URBAN CORE POLITICO!!!
Support for the Mayor within the inner city is almost nil and he's going to need those votes to ram through his agenda.
Like it or not, the Mayor is going to have to bargain and the first demand is a plush new committee assignment for Councilman Jermaine Reed.
Apparently, supporters of this local rising star aren't going to be happy with a leadership spot in the Councilman's current area of expertise . . .
"Housing would be a slap in the face," once council denizen said.
"We need Councilman Reed as the head of finance or at least Planning and Zoning. Anything less is an insult and a sign that Mayor James still isn't taking our community seriously."
Again, without a solid slate of votes Mayor Sly will be forced to make more deals with special interests in order to get the votes he needs . . . He has neither political capital nor the guaranteed votes to run roughshod over the Council like he did during his 1st term.
And at the start of this week it's clear the Mayor will no longer be able to leverage his so-called popularity against urban core politicos in the aftermath of a shamefully low voter turnout election.

Reed should not be the chair of any committee. His blatant self-serving introduction of the minimum wage ordinance 3 days before the primary, without any work or communication with fellow council members, shows that he is in politics for himself and can not build consensus or a political coalition.

Yes, this council may or may not be as weak as the present council was and just say "How high Mr Mayor", but they will do whatever he wants to get their plum assignments. That's all they care about. John Sharp was the only one that wouldn't play catch with Mayor Sly last time and they all saw where that gets you so they will play ball with the Mayor. All this talk about him having pressure is just silly.
