I always thought it was a really beautiful and popular homeless shelter. Plenty of homeless inside sleeping, reading, wandering around and using the bathrooms. Never knew it was a library.

ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful building inside and out and I am a tree lover but when all those trees mature, who's going to be able to see the bookbindings?
ReplyDeleteAlso, it's not just the downtown library that's full of homeless people. Try the Plaza library sometime. It even gets very hard to study which should be one of the things a library is for.
It really is a beautiful library. Admittedly, I haven't frequented a ton of libraries to compare it to. I used to live near that library and went in there periodically and was always amazed. It's hard for me to imagine a much more aesthetically pleasing library. This is what our tax dollars SHOULD be going towards. Things that truly enrich our community and help educate our youth and such. And not corporate/billionaire welfare. Just saying...

ReplyDeleteThey're not "homeless," they're "bums." Reserve the term homeless for people who involuntarily have no fixed abode.
ReplyDeleteYes the downtown library has a bum problem, like all libraries everywhere. But it's much better than when the library was at 12th and Oak. There, the smell was sometimes overpowering and there was no attempt to stop the panhandling and yelling. The new library has a guard at the entrance. There is not a lot of loud talking. I have actually seen one bum escorted out. It's a start.

ReplyDeleteIf you can't find a place to study in either the downtown or Plaza libraries, you aren't trying or studying very hard.
These things are called PUBLIC libraries for a reason. Yeah, you white boys from Johnson County might see some people in there who do not meet your personal standard of human perfection, a standard that you yourself fall woefully short of.
But what kind of heartless bastards will gripe about people causing no disturbance at all as they try to get out of the summer heat or winter cold in a very public place?

There will be plenty of parking downtown in a few years when the city lays off police and garbage collectors to pay for retiree pensions. When that day comes the downtown residents will shave their beards and take their cars to JoCo.

ReplyDeleteAnd no, dumbass. People looking for a respite from the heat or cold won't do anything stupid to get them kicked out. And the libraries do have security that are quick to escort unruly people out, which is why unruly people don't frequent libraries.
