Here's a reminder that local Democracy isn't working and Kansas City politicos are openly rejecting fair wage activists with double speak and cheap legislative tricks.

Now the reality of this move is that any hope of circumventing Missouri law is now lost. Also, the delay until after the election is a gambit to hope that fair wage fighters will forget this betrayal the next time these politicos contemplate running for reelection.

The lesson about all of this is simple: Mayor and City Council talk a great deal about support for the working poor and improving life for low income families but when it comes to a decision directly under their control and simply putting an initiative on the ballot, they side with the biz community and and their donors in order to circumvent simply letting the public have their say. Moreover, they KNOW that any subsequent work on minimum wage will be circumvented by the Missouri General Assembly and they'll have effectively dodged the blame with a rhetorical tactic despite the initial knife in the back. Sadly, most fair wage fighters aren't sophisticated enough to explain these tactics to their constituency.
So the lie continues . . . It's not that our TKC agrees or disagrees with a KCMO minimum wage increase, what needs to be understood is the outright, duplicitous and cynical tactics employed by Mayor and City Council.

ReplyDeleteIt ain't about democracy. The fact is LC is a city of fat asses that eats breakfast, lunch and a bunch of dinners at fast food joints. Add that the city is business buddies with a shitload of service entities in this town. This thing would not pass a popular vote if you hung a starving dead baby at the front porch of every polling place in town. Given that 30 percent of the city is already poor they aren't about to pay $3.35 for a little old MC D's burger.
