Recently, Kansas City Mayor Sly James delivered a fiery speech to protestors walking the street in search of a living wage from fast food joints.
Take a look:
Kansas City Mayor Sly James at Kansas City MO's $15 and a Union Rally
Money quote . . .
Mayor Sly James Said: "It is immoral, unjust, unreasonable, unforgivable, unexplainable that we live in the richest, most powerful, best country in the world and people work 40 hours a week and cannot feed their families...buy clothes they need, take care of their children's needs, access health care, cannot do the things that other people do and take for granted."
Now . . .
KANSAS CITY INSIDERS REMIND US: MAYOR SLY JAMES HAS ABSOLUTELY NO LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITY OR STANDING TO DO ANYTHING SUBSTANTIVE IN ORDER TO RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE!!!
All of this talk might amount to nothing more but an empty resolution that's even more worthless than TKC's University of Missouri - Kansas City degree in Communication Studies with a minor in pre-law, gender studies, cultural anthropology, cinematography and Elizabethan literature.
KC Insider perspective . . .
"The smoke and mirrors used by the Mayor on this issue is shameless. Worse than that, it is misleading to these people who are counting and working for better jobs. The Mayor is using them as nothing more than a prop. He knows there's nothing that he can do or will do to push this issue forward. It's a typical move by the Mayor who also uses the school district in same manner and until it's time to put in work to make things better that requires real risk . . . Risk of political capital that he has only been willing to expend on incentives and development projects during his first term."
You decide . . .
Sly's using the Sharpton-Jackson playbook now.
ReplyDeleteIt's adaptable to just about any situation.
This is shameful of the Mayor giving false hope to all those poor people
ReplyDeleteDumb, I can see maybe 10, but iv'e been working in a warehouse for 15 years, and I make 15.19. 15 for fast food is too much!
ReplyDelete"It is immoral, unjust, unreasonable, unforgivable, unexplainable that we live in the richest, most powerful, best country in the world and can't seem to pay their taxes on time and abide by the law.
ReplyDelete"TKC's University of Missouri - Kansas City degree in Communication Studies with a minor in pre-law, gender studies, cultural anthropology, cinematography and Elizabethan literature."
ReplyDeleteWhat about the minor in "DD" studies? Jordan Carver?
To say that its against the state constitution & therefore nothing can be done is misleading. You can do it anyway & see if the state really wants to stop you. It worked for Colorado. Marijuana is illegal in America, but legal in Colorado.
ReplyDeleteMost of you seem to envision only negative consequences, but it will invigorate the local economy. Other people, like 9:27, would benefit from the pressure on their employers to raise their wages as well. While I agree with him that $10 is more realistic, this needs to be done on the national level. I made $7.26 an hour in 1983 as an unskilled factory worker. Wages for the poor have really been this stagnant.
If Kansas City wants to be a national leader, then do this now. Because its the right thing to do.
I'm all for minimum wage going. Then everyone else's wages go up to. Then prices go up. Net gain, zero
ReplyDeleteSo YOU pay the MF'ers Byron.
ReplyDeleteIt already costs nine bucks for a salad, coke and a cookie at McD's. Drive the price up 60% and folks will either bring their lunches or drive elsewhere. Who's gonna pay the Marxist minimum wage then, dipshit?
The Banks can cover it, they've made plenty of money closing industries for 30 years
ReplyDeleteTwenty years ago a serious injury left me with needing to be retrained in a different career. The choices were to settle for minimum wage work or go to trucking school and make forty grand the first year. I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but if I can figure it out, why can't others see that
ReplyDeleteHe knows damn well every business in CKMO isn't happy about this, even the hipsters paying non livable wages are concerned.
ReplyDeleteHowever the election is coming.
I'm not sure what the minimum wage should be. But the US taxpayers have been subsidizing these workers to the tune of Billions of dollars a year in aid. Start the dialog at about 1 1/2 times per month above the top threshold of where government help would kick in. A lot of those big companies make big profits and it is past time that they take care of their workers.
ReplyDeleteShop local, where you can see where your dollars go. But above all else, at least a living wage for the people that do the work.
Here's a thought, have some pride as a man and don't settle for a job that has always been intended for teenagers
ReplyDeleteHow many political prisoner's has Kansas City Mayor thrown in the Jackson County Jail
ReplyDelete"If Kansas City wants to be a national leader, then do this now." The same may be said of the first lemming to get to the cliff. With about the same result.
ReplyDeleteKansas City, the village of idiots.
ReplyDeleteAsk Ford & GM what is the Joe trans plan? If wages stay too low and workers can't afford cars get 'em bussed keep 'em near busted. Rent! Food! Student loans! The fewer car buyers will be paying more on that new or pre-owned vehicle. Great, ain't it?
