DID KANSAS CITY MAYOR SLY SELL OUT HIS TECH SAVVY REPUTATION WITH CITY HALL RIDE-SHARE REGULATION CRACKDOWN?!?!?

Regardless of how Kansas City residents might feel about Internets ride-sharing . . . The fact is that Mayor Sly finds himself on the opposite side of so many online advocates who believe their industry doesn't need regulation.

Again . . . That debate has been settled . . .

WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO WATCH IS MAYOR SLY ATTEMPTING TO SALVAGE HIS INTERNETS TECH SAVVY IMAGE DESPITE HIS PALTRY LEGISLATIVE RECORD . . . SADLY, THE MAYOR'S TECH SKILLS ARE BASED MOSTLY ON HIS AFFINITY FOR SELFIES!!!

Again, this isn't about ride-share . . . It's about image . . . The Mayor is probably right that this industry needs regulation . . . But that doesn't fit in with the renegade spirit of start-ups and tech firms . . .

SORRY MAYOR SLY . . . YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS . . . YOU SIDED AGAINST INTERNETS ENTREPRENEURS WHEN IT ACTUALLY CAME TO A VOTE!!!

While it was probably the right decision, it's leaves the mayor desperately spinning his tech credentials that are mostly promo social media blasts.

You decide . . .

Mayor James Issues Statement on Proposed Regulation of Ridesharing Companies

I fully expect the ordinance placed on the City Council docket today regulating transportation network companies like Uber and Lyft to be met with the same misleading hyperbole we’ve heard before.

Let me be clear: I welcome new technologies and entrepreneurial industries to Kansas City, and any assertion to the contrary is ridiculous. Just this week, Kansas City is one of only five cities in the world being recognized for our achievements in those areas at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress in Milan, Italy.

It’s important to know that ridesharing is not illegal in Kansas City. Some Uber drivers are legally operating here based on the current regulations that Uber is working so hard to eliminate. Z-Trip, another ridesharing company, is also fully compliant.

All Uber has to do is share their drivers’ background checks, ensure their drivers have driver’s certificates and their cars are permitted, and ensure their drivers carry adequate insurance.

Technology and convenience cannot trump safety. Kansas City can be a welcoming place for high-tech industries without compromising safety. I welcome companies to our market who can play by the rules and who care as deeply about our citizens’ safety as they do about their profits.

  4. KC would make a big statement if they told Travis Kalanick and his lying psychopathic buddies to shove it where the sun don't shine.

  5. But OMG!!! Internet companies like this are going to save the world!!!

  6. Make no mistake. The new ordinance is designed to make sure that the City gets the license fees from uber drivers.
Deregulating would mean more competition and more choices... who would want that? I want to keep getting in cabs that smell like curry and sweaty armpits and pay $12 for a 4 min fare. And those retired police crown Victoria are such a treat. Thanks Yellow Cab and the City of KCMO for making sure nothing ever changes beside higher debt and more taxes.

  7. 3:41 - you are a moron. Uber is a soulless company that makes money by placing well meaning idiots (both drivers and passengers) in extreme risk by not inspecting vehicles, driver backgrounds or insurance.

Because "ridesharing" "driverpartners" aren't employees, Uber isn't required to pay a minimum wage, cover expenses, pay fines or court costs or give a single fuck about the wellbeing of their marks er I mean drivers.

Uber, lyft and all the other "sharing economy" companies are straight up cold blooded capitalists that are conspiring to drive down wages globally and remove all worker benefits, collective bargaining etc.

Why do you think Uber is worth so much money? It isn't their troves of mindless users and supporters. It's the 20 percent cut they get from millions of fares around the planet.

Bill George and his cab monopoly aren't good people, but Uber is pure evil.
