TEACHING MOMENT: KANSAS CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS IMPROVE BOND RATING BUT STILL OFFER JUNK EDUCATION!!!

TKC NOTE: Here's an important perspective from AN AWESOME KANSAS CITY INSIDER on a recent financial development for our embattled public school system that still faces lingering doubts.

KCPS: Debt Upgraded, education still JUNK

Apparently, the Kansas City Public School is managing their financing better then their students.

One of the big three debt ratings companies, Standard & Poors, lifted their bond rating from A to A-plus. Now this sounds impressive until you realize that all this really says is that the District has a pretty solid ability to tax us, and collect those taxes, to retire their current debt. Don’t pay your property tax, they take your property… (The state of Missouri, by the way, is rated triple A, by comparison).

This, of course, says nothing about the quality of education. Had S&P decided to rate the value of a KCPS diploma it would, unfortunately, be rated “junk”.

  1. Every time I get my personal property tax bill in the mail I want to cross out KCPS and not pay that portion.

  2. Great info, TKC. Again, the only source for useful, and in this case sad, but REALLY FUNNY, way of looking at our disastrous schools.

  6. KCMPD is delusional from the top down. The objective measure of an education is how the students do on standardized testing. Then we find out that all these "A" "scholars" are really D and F students. Grade padding, self delusional, self-congratulating - par for the course for this District's administration.

But to be fair - many of the kids don't give a shit about their education, so it's hard to educate someone who doesn't care.

It's a combination of a lot of things that makes KCMSD what it is.
