Dear Mr. Tony: Einstein once said: "Prognostication is difficult, especially about the future." So, I don't like making predictions. But, since you asked, here are my two responses: First, Off. Wilson will not be indicted for murder, but he may be for a lesser offense. SEcond, there will not be any serious violence in response, although there may some unruly demonstrations. And, you did not ask for a Third Prediction, but this is one I am happy to make because I am quite certain of it: If Off. Wilson is indicted for murder, there will be an explosion of violence in black neighborhoods all over the country as the local cops stop doing their jobs in these neighborhoods. If Wilson is indicted for murder, every cop in the country will assume it was because of unstated (and sometimes stated) threats of riots if he is not so indicted. So, they will know that if accused of racism they can forget about due process--and out of sheer self-survival will act accordingly. It is a lot harder to predict the action of the Grand Jury--they had to choose between giving in to blackmail (and being seen as cowards) and doing what they felt was right (which could end up with them getting the blame for civil disorder). Not an easy choice--none of us know what we would do in that position much less what someone else would do. As for predicting race riots, there are a huge number of imponderables that cannot be determined in advance; eg, will the authorities over-react and "dump fuel on the fire"? Will the media act with some degree of responsibility or will they "fan the flames?" No way to determine for certain these isues in advance, so no certainty if there will or will not be riots. ReplyDeleteIt should be interesting, but my bet is a significantly lesser charge and minor amounts of rioting by the usual cast of characters who were going to do it either way. No large scale social upheaval, and nothing that a couple of hundred pissed-off cops can't quell quickly.

No indictment and no riot. The make up of the jury won't make it work. Under the circumstances there is not much for premeditation and given the number of non mothers the paternal swing isn't there. Althought I do bet it doesn't take a week before some shit heel goes before the press and says he/she was pressured by other members of the jury to cut Wilson slack.

In our state the police have wide authority to act when a suspect is fleeing from the cops. For law enforcement, involuntary manslaughter is relatively easy to overcome.
Anyway this falls we are all screwed.
Mr. Tony there is way too much distrust in our community. There should not be "sides".
