KANSAS CITY POWER BROKER SHARON SANDERS BROOKS REMEMBERS FORMER D.C. MAYOR MARION BARRY!!!

Former Kansas City Council Member Sharon Sanders Brooks remains one of the strongest advocates for the 3rd District and a wealth of information to her many followers via social media. Today she offers her perspective on the passing of elected official Marion Barry:

MARION BARRY, JR. LONG TIME ELECTED OFFICIAL IN D.C. DIES-- MY REFLECTION OF HIS ROLE AS A PUBLIC SERVANT.

I awoke this morning to the news that 4 Time Mayor of Washington, D.C.

Marion Barry had passed. Barry was currently a council member for Ward 8 in Washington, D.C. Ward 8 is the somewhat like Kansas City's 3rd District .

As a native Washingtonian I can tell you despite Marion Barry's flaws three things I can tell you with first hand knowledge, Marion Barry supported the YOUTH of Washington, D.C. and assured that all who were willing to work had SUMMER JOBS during his tenure as Mayor. He also worked hard to make sure the SENIOR CITIZENS of the City were respected by his administration and cared for. Washington, D.C. established an Office of Aging during his administration, I do believe. Some major cities in 2014, still do not have an Office on Aging which provides services and resources to Senior Citizens.

Marion Barry also constantly encouraged homeowners in the 1980's NOT to sell their homes and leave the City. He warned early about GENTRIFICATION and pleaded with long term residents to stay. Sadly his words were NOT heeded and now most working class and middle class residents have been priced out of Washington, D.C. .

I was once a young person who was fortunate to receive summer jobs due to his efforts. I heard from my late Mother the efforts the Mayor personally made for Senior Citizens. He visited every Senior Citizen Housing Complex in the City and every Senior Recreational facility and NOT just at Election Time. He held a yearly FREE appreciation luncheon for ALL of the Senior Citizens in the City and they were bused to the event at no charge. At the time Washington, D.C. had a very large Senior Citizen population and they were a powerful VOTING BLOCK in the City.

Here are two first hand Marion Barry stories which I can share. Fresh out of college I was working at the Sheridan Broadcasting Network (SBN) in Arlington, Virginia. In order to get to work from D.C. I would take the bus and then the subway . At one of the bus stops Marion Barry boarded the bus without security and an entourage' to everyone's surprise. He paid his fare and then proceeded to work the aisle of the crowded bus campaigning, shaking hands and talking to people.

Well at this particular time I was very annoyed with City services because I had been trying to get the trees on my block trimmed and had called the City several times to no avail. Well Mayor sat down beside me , introduced himself, asked my name; where did I work etc. and finally could he count on my VOTE. I gave my name and stated where I worked and that I was very annoyed with City services and that I could NOT give my support to his candidacy at the time . He asked what problem I was having with City services and where did I live ? Naive I told the Mayor where I lived and what the problem was.

When I arrived at the office I eagerly rushed into the office to tell the newsroom what had happened on my work to work today. Before I could tell what happened the whole newsroom already KNEW because the Mayor had called my office to verify that I really worked there. I was shocked and everyone cracked up and it was the talk of the day.

There's more ... when I arrived home that evening all the trees on my blocked looked like they had been scalped. The trees had been trimmed way way back. My initial complaint regarding overgrown trees had been dealt with quickly by the Barry Administration.

  1. Yes he stands in that fine tradition of corrupt, egotistical, womanizing, substance abusing, high living Negro politicians. Yes he was a credit to his face. At least he wasn't hypocritical enough to call himself Reverend. We can see his legacy here in Kansas City.

  2. Meant to say he was a credit to his RACE.

  3. Marion Barry also constantly encouraged homeowners in the 1980's NOT to sell their homes and leave the City.

In contrast, virtually every Black politician in Kansas City seeks to steal and scam other Blacks out of their real estate rights - as to enable them to be developers with no credentials, training or other real estate expertise. Even Carwash Cleaver has a construction company. SMH

Maybe Kansas City politicians should smoke crack, yeah or naw?

  7. Some say there is a cultural difference between other races and the black race.

Some say that a majority of black people condone illegal activity, as an expression of "sticking it to the man."

Some say that most black people have been conditioned to be dependent upon the government, instead of striving to be independent.

Former Kansas City Council Member Sharon Sanders Brooks states "I can tell you despite Marion Barry's flaws three things I can tell you with first hand knowledge, Marion Barry"....

    1) supported the YOUTH, and assured that all who were willing to work had SUMMER JOBS.

Sounds like Ms. Brooks is willing to condone Marion Barry's extensive history with illegal drugs, such as crack cocaine. How can a "crack-head" be a role model for youth? And government-subsidized summer jobs? Sounds like breeding a dependency on government.

    2) make sure the SENIOR CITIZENS of the City were respected by his administration and cared for.

How can a crack cocaine addict foster respect for anyone, when they're abusing the law, their family, their neighbors, their constituents, and themselves?
Marion Barry facilitated the crack epidemic in Washington, D.C. which sought to destroy the city.

    3) Marion Barry also constantly encouraged homeowners in the 1980's NOT to sell their homes and leave the City.

The crack cocaine trade did more to destroy Washington, D.C., increase crime, and drive residents away, than any hipster gentrification effort.

We believe Ms. Sharon Sander Brooks is no doubt confusing her pleasant memories of growing up in D.C., with the man who happened to be Mayor at the time, and was up to all manner of illegality without her knowledge.

    What is "itolizing"?

The word is IDOLIZING if you're going to try and insult people, at least use the proper spelling. Kansas City is a pathetic little town.

  10. Marion Barry---Legacy of Shame

His personal and public life was fraught with high drama and irony. He struggled with alcohol and drug addiction, relapse and recovery. He was married four times, divorced three times and separated from his fourth wife. His extramarital liaisons and legal trouble over unpaid taxes made news.

“Some governments are corrupt but are known for their competency in running the city,” Sen. John C. Danforth (R-Mo.) told Mr. Barry at a 1989 hearing on the D.C. budget. “Others are incompetent but considered clean. [Washington’s] government is scandalously corrupt and hopelessly incompetent.”

“Patronage, in the guise of local ‘empowerment,’ has always been the hallmark of Barry’s governing philosophy,” wrote former FBI agent and Washington lawyer Carl T. Rowan Jr. in a 1998 New Republic article. To the mayor, Rowan said, the D.C. bureaucracy was “a source of jobs for people whose main qualification was their eligibility to vote for Barry.”

Before leaving office in 1999, Mr. Barry would lose his power over the city’s finances to a financial control board that Congress created in 1995. Courts would take over entire city departments.

The city agencies that served public-housing residents, foster children, inmates and the mentally ill would all be placed in receivership. A judge would later call conditions at the city’s receiving home for juvenile delinquents “unacceptable for a civilized country.”

Residents of a city-operated nursing home had limbs amputated because of infected bedsores. Infant mortality and murder rates remained among the highest in the nation, and the Fire Department would plead that its ability to fight fires was seriously impaired. In the public schools, dropout rates remained high, test scores low.

  11. White people reject their criminal element. Blacks worship theirs. Is there any wonder the black community is dysfunctional?

  15. 10:06, the comments, with the exclusion of yours, were mostly thoughtful and informative. 7:04 was spot on. Sanders-Brooks would be well advised to keep her poorly worded and supremely misguided hero worship of Marion Barry to herself. It just confirms what we know her to be...corrupt and stupid and racist.
