Home invaders sentenced to 25 years in prison

Maryln Standifer and Joshua Fields -- convicted of invading a south Kansas City home and terrorizing residents, including children, with a blaze of gunfire -- were each sentenced today to 25 years in prison, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.

Standifer was sentenced to 15 years on charges of Attempted Robbery, Armed Criminal Action and Burglary and 10 years on Kidnapping and Armed Criminal Action charges. Judge Robert Schieber set the 10- and 15- year sentences to run consecutively for a total of a 25-year prison sentence.

A second defendant in connection with the same home invasion, Joshua Fields, was also sentenced today to 25 years on Attempted Robbery and Kidnapping and 15 years on two Armed Criminal Action charges. His total prison sentence was also set for a total of 25 years.

“I’m glad justice is being served,” the victim testified today. “I’m doing this for my kids and their safety and …. for safety everywhere.”

Judge Schieber acknowledged the victim’s bravery in coming forward. And he noted the serious nature of the crime, which he added might easily had resulted in multiple homicides. “It was the shootout at the OK Corral with four little girls right in the middle of it,” Schieber said.

Standifer, who acknowledged his gang activities, had been dubbed by media as “the Teflon man” for beating multiple murder charges.

“It’s time for a new nickname,” Baker told media after the Standifer sentencing.

A third defendant in the case has already pleaded guilty and is in federal custody, while a fourth defendant is expected to be sentenced next week.
