TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! FACT CHECKING SHADY LAPTOP INCENTIVE FROM KANSAS CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS!!!
This morning our blog community features IMPORTANT KANSAS CITY FACT CHECKING OF A RECENT KCPS PUBLICITY PROMOTION.
To wit . . .
CHECK THIS EPIC FACT CHECK AND PERSPECTIVE REVEALING STUDENT ENROLLMENT INCENTIVE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE EQUATION AND SKEPTICISM ABOUT THIS KCPS TECH PLAY THAT'S SHORT ON INTERNETS CONNECTION!!!
Here's the abridged word from an e-mail that's floating around far and wide amid Kansas City education circles:
KCPS entices charter students w/ posh middle schools and personal laptops
At the instruction of Superintendent Steve Green, KCPS principals and the school teams they were required to form, are knocking on doors of former KCPS students to entice them back to the district. Salary bonuses are built into KCPS contracts when student enrollment increases, there's confidence that KCPS has the right enticements to lure the kids back to KCPS and collect that bonus.
They're betting that 2 over-the-top-posh middle schools and personal laptops for all students K-12 will bring students back to the district.
KCPS is betting on it to the tune of over $50,000,000 and counting.
- Forget the fact that there’s been no academic improvement during Green’s tenure: 70% of KCPS students are still not at grade level.
Just focus on how wonderful it is to have stylish middle schools. (Over $21,000,000 in renovations for 2 buildings, not counting elaborate furnishings throughout -- like humungous flat screens in hallways)
- Don’t mention that over half of the households east of Troost don’t have internet at home.
- Just focus on how hip it is that the students get a personal laptop to take home. (Est. $25,000,000+ for laptops and access to wifi in every classroom, cafeteria, office in the district)
That’s the message today to the over 10,000 students who have left KCPS for charter public schools.
It’s all sizzle, no steak. And the message is laser focus.
KCPS employs a full-time demographer who can pinpoint households the district thinks are most likely to respond to this kind of sizzle. So, who’s most likely to get a knock on their door today?
CLUE: It’s not you.

Better title: fix is in for kcps.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you needed internet to do word or to read powerpoints you downloaded at school.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, free laptops to take home never work. They are always the result of graft (usually someone with apple ties on the school board)
Wow! Green has been superintendent for two whole years and hasn't gotten things completely turned around yet!
ReplyDeleteI bet if you look they are getting them for the low low "institutional price" of 750 per macbook air.
ReplyDeleteInstead of the 500 it would take to make a mass order from Lenovo or HP for something twice as powerful.
My property taxes keep going up for shit like this?
ReplyDeleteJust think, if you have a $200,000 house and pay non abated property taxes and 100% of your school levy money goes to laptops then you have just bought THREE whole macbooks.
ReplyDeleteJust think of all the lives these 3 macbooks are going to bring!
They don't have internet at home but the all have the latest Jordans and cell phones.
ReplyDeleteThey are lenovos and they cost 450. and you can buy insurance to replace broken or lost or stolen ones for 40.
ReplyDeleteFree laptops are great but we need more instruction and a real lesson plan if they're going to work. Giveaways are not the solution.
ReplyDeleteDo they come with child porn like last weeks revelation????
