Longtime Kansas City advocates against local violence have recently expressed their strong reservations about a recently proposed memorial to the South Kansas City slaying of five innocent victims.

Like it or not, the topic of Kansas City homicide memorials and vigils has always proven a controversial subject in Kansas City given that there are so many throughout the year.
Here's the word from a local activist soon to be taking similar complaints to mainstream media and civic institutions:
"A permanent homicide memorial in this instance wouldn't be the best way to unite the community. In fact, it's something that would divide us. There are instance of multiple murders in the African-American community but there are few monuments to the victims. East of Troost there are innocent victims of homicide who we mourn throughout the year . . . Don't get me wrong, if these people want to establish a memorial event or hold a vigil, I would be there right along side them. But a monument to these killings while we ignore so many others would simply be inequitable."
This KANSAS CITY INSIDER offers a better suggestion . . .
"I would encourage this group to establish a monument to ALL Kansas City homicide victims that extends outside of their neighborhood and acknowledges that this entire metropolitan area has a problem with gun violence. But to use public land and permits from the city would be an inequitable distribution of funds and an insult to the families of so many people in other parts of the city who don't have permission from the city to build a monument."
Word among local anti-violence advocates is that they will move to oppose any monument if it's presented to the Parks Board.
