KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR 20-POINT ELECTION REJECTION COULD SIGNAL LOCAL TAXPAYER REBELLION!!!

The tenure of Mayor Sly James has been defined by a slew of tax increases and now it seems the overwhelming trend in recent elections is a rejection of increased local levies.

To wit . . .

KANSAS CITY VOTERS HAVE DEFEATED TWO CONSECUTIVE BIG MONEY ELECTION QUESTIONS FROM THE CIVIC ELITE AT THE OUTSET OF WHAT MIGHT BE TAXPAYER REBELLION!!!

Here's a summary of the trend that our blog community has witnessed for quite some time.

Forbes: Kansas City Streetcar Expansion Proposal Derails at the Polls

Deets . . .

"Doug Stone, a Husch Blackwell LLP attorney working on streetcar issues for Kansas City, said the no vote will mean Kansas City will need to start from scratch on forming a new TDD that can help pay for the more than $500 million worth of proposed transportation projects. That will require a new petition and court approval before another vote could be held.

"What would that new district look like? We don’t yet know, but whether Kansas Citians even have an appetite for more taxes with such narrow purposes right now remains to be seen."

And while it's nice to think that voters are wising up . . . What's really happening here is real opposition to these local initiatives has stood up and HELPED TO FIGHT these local tax schemes. Realistically, without Brad Bradshaw cash or Mr. Peanut support these tax efforts would have easily passed. In Kansas City, the reality is that civic power brokers can easily dominate UNLESS they face real competition that's somewhat equally matched when it comes to fundraising. This fun fact is important to remember as the next E-Tax fight approaches.

  1. The well is dry in KC.

  2. The mayor would be wise to beat Dan Cofran to the punch, say he's heard the voters, will comply with the results of the TDD vote, and will concentrate on basics.

He'd also be very wise to distance himself from Mensa boy, who has an amazing knack of pissing off everyone he comes into contact with.

  3. Our is time to start getting rid of some taxes before they add new ones. For example,

    1. the health tax. With Obama care, it is not needed anymore. Maybe a very small dollar that could come from general fund.

    2. Earning tax. If they get a police tax, every department has a special tax and this could be eliminated.

    3. TIF taxes. They need to refinance all the poor performing TIF's and get the city out of all that bad debt. PIAC is nothing more than a revenue stream to pay off Troys debt.

    4. Fire troy and all those assist city managers. That would lower my taxes too. A bunch of dead weight and girlfriends.

    5. Vote PIAC out and only hold capital elections by project. That way when they send out flyers for streets and sidewalks, that is what they spend the money on. No more millions of dollars of discretionary money for council, it is just a slush fund.

    That is just a start!

  14. 8:44 is wrong. From your remarks you seem to think all of the TIFs are functioning perfectly fine. Wrong! Some do not generate enough tax dollars to pay for the improvements. The City pays the difference, smart ass. And the amount is not insignificant, it is in the millions.
