This shit is not rare. When you see our local firemen shopping for groceries, ask yourself, "who else gets paid to shop". Or perhaps, "who gets paid to sleep"?
It's built around a tradition of staffing that allows firefighters to work a 24 hour schedule, resulting in big overtime, and paying firefighters to watch TV, work out, shop while they are getting paid. I saw one watch his kids soccer game while the firetruck stood by.
Bigots on this site consistently bemoan social services. Let me tell you, they have nothing on the firefighters in this Country.
Yael, you have made yourself irrelevant. We all note with interest that no one, not a single reader commented on your article. Could you please just stop writing and resign. Its time to cleanse the deck, free up some salary money for a new voice. Anyone but you!

Since day one he's been trying to shove pie in the sky projects down our throats and used voter suppression to get his starter line through. 130 million and 348 votes. This Mayor has never been focused on basic services.

ReplyDeleteMaybe Prez Dummy-asshole can explain how the FD can use a new dedicated transit tax and federal transit money for fire department stuff. Because the 2 things are TOTALLY fucking unrelated.
ReplyDeleteBetter yet, maybe he can take a vacation to ALMOST ANY OTHER CITY IN AMERICA, where they have BOTH good fire department, like ours, AND good public transportation, unlike ours. Public transportation IS a basic public service and everyone knows ours is shitty, underfunded, and WAY behind our peers and increasingly, smaller cities.
What kind of fire department do they think well have if the urban core continues to hemorrhage population?
No tax base = no FD
And the firemen, most of whom don't even live in the real city, need to look at what Overland Park and Lee's Summit fire departments are like if they think the whole city should just be suburban, and suburban-style developments are the only thing we should invest in.
Strange that they're not bitching about billions we spend on far flung highways that no one uses and suburban real estate speculation that doesn't pay off or sits vacant for 50 years.

ReplyDeleteYael doesn't know the half of it. This is about the fact that Sly is overseeing a Fire Dept that is run by Troy Schulte and there is no Fire Chief to manage operations. The EMS side is in absolute chaos since the City got nailed in Fed Court for cheating the workers out of overtime pay and Berardi has no idea how to fix it. Sly's only answer is to fire Schulte and Berardi and hire someone from the outside to come in and clean up this mess.
