TKC SUNDAY TESTIMONY!!! DOMESTIC ABUSE REPORTING PROBLEMS TO KCPD PERSIST FOR SOUTH KANSAS CITY LADY!!!

TKC NOTE: This morning we want to share an important story sent our way of one woman's experience. There are some relevant links and resources in this post for anyone else facing similar problems confronting domestic violence. Check it:

South Kansas City Patrol - As Bad as the Other Guys

Last year you put a post on your blog about my experience with domestic violence and problems with KC police and court not protecting the victims. After a year of continual problems with the South Patrol’s inability to protect and handle calls regarding violence I was hoping you could revisit the subject. Bad cops is a hot topic right now and I’d love to see KC police, especially South Patrol, held accountable and put before a microscope for how they handle violent crimes in our city.

The reason I am emailing you about it today is because my disabled sister was assaulted by her Share-a-Fare driver on her way to medical treatment. There was a witness by the technician of the medical facility, a 911 call, a call to Share/Fare and the medical facility. After the police arrived they said there was no real evidence and refused to write a report. (Sound familiar?) Finally after the supervisor of the medical facility talked to them they wrote a report but they refused to allow my sister to press charges. The desk sergeant says it's up to the discretion of the officer to decide if they feel someone is guilty. Guilty? Since when are the police officers judge and jury? Their job is to take a report and apprehend the assaulter and then let it go to court.

I dealt with the police for many years over my own domestic abuse situation. Every call was the same. They treated me like I was a bother and they “had more important things to do than babysit marital problems”. Consider this was said after I was punched in the face with visible markings, bruises, or bleeding. I finally received a protection order after he assaulted me in public at our children’s school – this was after he was stalking me every day at the school and the police would do nothing, telling me don’t worry he won’t do anything at a school. When he violated that protection order, the Sergeant at the station refused to even take a report let alone press charges. I had to call the City Prosecuting Attorneys office to scare him into even take a report. By the way – the abuse department found it was a clear violation and he was arrested. That wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t stayed at the station for 2 hours arguing with the Sergeant.

This is police abuse. This is police officers refusing to protect victims of violent crimes because they don’t want to have to do the paperwork. This is police pretending they are judge and jury and acting like there has to be a case presented before them for THEM to choose the guilty. That is not their role. This is why violence against women and the disabled in KC is so rampant. We don’t hear about it often because victim’s are embarrassed and ashamed to talk about it, but Rose Brooks, Hope House, and other centers are full to the brim of women with the same experience.

I’d love to hear from you, TKC. I’m going full media with this and you are the first person I’ve contacted other than the police department itself. Help me raise the awareness on this issue. We need to make police be a part of our community by protecting our mothers, sisters, and daughters.

  1. a lot of people report directly to places like rose brooks or hope house, it's better to have an advocate help with reporting rather than somebody directly involved with the situation deal with authorities.

  2. I'm calling BULLSHIT!!! 99.9% of these stories are found to be untrue or exaggerated when investigated.

  3. Not sure this is the place or format to be arguing these matters.

Does everything need to be on the internet these days?

  4. When the police are sweeping their own internal domestic abuse cases under the carpet and failing to prosecute their own it is no surprise that the culture is to take little to no action. Current Federal law makes it illegal to own or posses a firearm once convicted of any domestic violence crime. So the cops have been taking care of their own and that is FACT!

  6. Did she file a complaint? All of these allegations would be on audio and video from the patrol car and would be substantiated or dismissed by review of the audio. Hmmmmmm

  8. Move out of Kansas City. All the suburbs would be happy to take your reports. They spend most of their shifts writing reports.

  9. I am the disabled person who she is talking about I am in a wheelchair and was assaulted from the driver in front of my dialysis center in front of a tech .(dialysis tech) there would be no audio for the person commenting about that because I was interviewed in front of the dialysis center inside. The police officer said she was taking info then later said she would file a report . Whaat confused me is she said it was her saying one thing and me another . I HAD a witness to what happened to me she was standing right there holding the door open for me at the dialysis center.

  10. You have to protect your self. Buy a pistol. Learn how and when to shoot. Then shoot to kill.

  13. One more thing I would like to add , again I am the disabled person assaulted ... I was not given the chance to file charges on the person because I was told it was her word against mine(((even though I had a witness)) .. It left me all confused I was already in shock and crying over what happened and then confused on what the officers said to me .

Assaulted is a vague and ambiguous description lady. Since you put it out there and felt compelled to comment twice, how about the details? Im calling bullshit. If a share fare driver assaulted you in front of a witness they would have been arrested on the spot.

  17. I think this is a good place for this discussion. People treated unfairly need a place, that others go to read, to vent. Perhaps something can now be done about this.

  20. Let's not forget that assault is the act of creating apprehension of an imminent harmful or offensive contact with a person, not to be confused with battery.

For example if I saw chuck walking down the street I'd have a valid charge of assault, knowing he could explode at any minute with rage.

  21. What kind of assault. Verbal? Other?

    Mr. Tony,
I hope the purported victim gets a written statement from the witness. I hope she contacts a reputable agency to help her push through any barriers. I hope she gets any reports from KCPD. If none were taken I hope she registers a complaint with the Office of Citizens Complaints. Further, she can and should contact the Board of Police Commissioners. If they prove unhelpful she can then contact the Governor's office as the board members are named by that elected office.
Is this the place for a general discussion of policing? Yes. But not the place to air out all aspects of a genuine complaint until all action has been taken.

  26. The author is clearly not big on specifics. That's a sign there's a lot more to her story than she really wants told. Police reports are mostly public information. How about you give the case number to these readers. Or better yet, go get a copy and post it yourself. That way we see what really happened.

  27. No!
Don't post anything. Get legal help. Maybe this is a load of crap or maybe you have a legit grievance but follow procedure.
Lucky you have some recourse in Jeff City. This mayor only wants happy talk.
