So far Kansas City's response to the ongoing conflict in Ferguson, Missouri has been peaceful and well-meaning.
A non-violent rally was well attended by local activists and mostly kind souls who wanted to convey their dissent constructively and show just a bit of solidarity with STL area protestors without taking down an innocent Quiktrip.

Nearly every Saturday night in this town has been a hot mess with violent flash mobs dominating either The Plaza or Westport.
KANSAS CITY INSIDERS HAVE WARNED MAYOR SLY THAT HIS ROCK THE BLOCK EVENT IS A BAD IDEA AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO SPIN OUT OF CONTROL OR SIMPLY TURN VIOLENT LIKE IT HAS IN YEARS PAST!!!
Our blog community FIRST noted pleas to the mayor to postpone the event . . .
The Mayor chose to ignore and deny what was simply a call for caution with a bit of bravado and willful ignorance.

Really, that's all we wanted to hear but Mayor Sly turns just about every question to his administration into a challenge because he simply doesn't understand that political discourse shouldn't be about "winning at all costs" and communicating with Kansas City needs to be more substantive than simply sharing selfies and backslapping on Twitter. Finally, we can't help but notice that Mayor Sly's stubbornness and brash tactics have increasingly become an Achilles heel to his mayoral administration as their lists of failures continues to grow.
Brief aside . . . The fallout doesn't just include tonight's pizza/dance party but also holds consequences for law enforcement in Kansas City i.e. local cops don't seem to like talk about body cam legislation. But I digress...
Again, let's go on record and reiterate that we want nothing less than absolute safety and security for any Kansas City young person who attends this event. However, it's important to note that a cynical survey of tonight's party just seems like the Mayor is using students as props to support his agenda without completely understanding the reality of an ongoing racial crisis in Missouri and how quickly crowds can be incited not by bloggy news content written for adults with sophisticated humor, style, taste and wit . . . But by circumstances that are still unfolding.

ReplyDeleteKansas City Falling Star token minority writer of all things superficial and frivolous, J. Osterizer, seemingly goes "all-in" with her Saturday column, reinforcing her previous faulty efforts to defend Michael Brown of Ferguson, Missouri.
ReplyDeleteAdopting the liberal activist line that the Ferguson Police released store video of a "person who may or may not be Michael Brown" (no doubt whatsoever!) stealing, in order to assassinate his character, and that his criminal history has absolutely no bearing in this case. This is an example of the "gotcha" politics played by the race-baiting activists----demand the video be released, and then when it hurts your case by substantiating police accounts, accuse the police of prejudice and engaging in character assassination!
Ms. Osterizer, as before, once again gets lost in a litany of unrelated incidents and racial attitudes that have nothing to do with the Ferguson case. She cherry-picks a few historical cases where white criminals lived to see their day in court, while neglecting to mention all the black criminals who have also been apprehended without being killed. One wonders if Ms. Osterizer knows that are prisons are crowded with living-breathing black men!
I found it particularly disturbing that Ms. Osterizer chose to reference in a positive way two local black rappers who apparently made the scene at the recent Plaza protest. Holding up as positive role models young black males who rap with vulgarity about violence, drugs, whores, anti-police, "niggers", "bitches", etc., is perhaps one small part of the perpetual cycle of violence commonly found in urban America. Ms. Osterizer is helping to perpetuate this cycle by using her column to highlight the wrong people.
Congratulations Ms. Osterizer, by choosing to side with the militant left, the race-baiters and outside provocateur extortionists, some in our society will continue to believe that law enforcement is the enemy, when in fact those men and women in uniform, black-white-latino-asian are the 24 hours/7 days a week guardians of our society, maintaining order out of an otherwise anarchistic chaos. Congratulations!

The mayor is fucked. he doesn't know whether to shit or go blind. No matter what he does he is wrong on this one. if he cancels the event, he will admit to the city, that he believes blacks are trouble seeking criminals who once again, can't be trusted to eschew violence. If he lets the event proceed and there is no problem, he is still criticized for risking an apocolypse for political gain (And trust me, there IS the possibiltiy of an apocolypse.). If he lets the event proceed and there is gunfire and loss of life, or looting and destruction, he is REALLY fucked.

My guess, is that there will be such an overwhelming police force there that he will slide by. It will be close, because the fact is, large gatherings of this nature are usually going to create problems.

ReplyDeleteI've equipped 50 young urban youths with GoPro cameras thanks to an emergency funding effort by Sly and the city council.
Tomorrow we have told the kids to download the footage so that we can see if there were any problems that need addressing by the community, such as the sidewalks being too narrow causing confrontation, lines at the soda stands being too long causing confrontation, not enough cooling fans in the area causing confrontation, these types of things.
It's a groundbreaking effort to fully immerse ourselves in this diverse culture and finally find a way to meet their specific and particular needs.
Good news! In the interests of peace racial diversity we will be busing in 800 Asian folk, 800 Latinos and 800 Whites. We will be playing Luke Warm's new rap hit, "Hands Up" with sound bites of Rodney Kings famous,"Can't We All Just Get Along." Happy Union at the Station everyone.

During riots in Detroit in '67, people held neighborhood meeting for developing their strategy for defending the area if the riots should spill out into the neighborhood. Of course 90%+ of them were WWII vets so it shouldn't have been a surprise that they knew their way around firearms. They knew that if the worst came to be that the police would not be able to keep their families safe so they looked to each other for help. And that's exactly what's happening in MO. People know that when the whip comes down the government cannot and will not be able to protect them. And that's precisely one of the reasons for the 2nd Amendment.

ReplyDeleteOfficer Wilson was on patrol and noticed two males walking down the middle of the street. He slowed his vehicle, lowered his window, and instructed them to get on the sidewalk, out of the street. They ignored his instructions and continued walking in the same direction as he watched them now in his rear-view mirror.
He pulled to the side of the street, and heard over his police radio a strong-arm robbery report with descriptions of two suspects which matched the two he had just encountered.
He backed his vehicle to the two men, still in the street, and as he began to exit his patrol car, Michael Brown shoved the door, pushing Officer Wilson back into the vehicle. A physical struggle ensued whereby Officer Wilson grabbed a hold of Michael Brown, and was punched by Michael Brown. Now under physical assault, Officer Wilson reached for his gun, at which point Michael Brown attempted to wrest control of the gun, and one round was fired inside the patrol car during the struggle.
Michael Brown and accomplice then ran down the street, were about 35 feet away, when Officer Wilson ordered them to halt with their hands in the air. The two stopped, turned toward Officer Wilson and began taunting him with something like "What are you going to do?" Michael Brown began running full-speed toward the officer at which time Officer Wilson began firing his weapon. The first couple of shots failed to stop Michael Brown moving forward. The last shot was a round to the forehead, at which time Michael Brown finally fell to the pavement, just in front of Officer Wilson.
As the facts continue to surface in this case, more and more people will realize that Officer Wilson followed standard police protocol and was not acting outside the rules of engagement. I would not be surprised if the toxicology report indicates Michael Brown was under the influence of drugs at the time of his death. Either way, Michael Brown had just robbed a store, disobeyed a police officer, assaulted a police officer, attempted to take the officer's weapon, and while at gunpoint rushed toward the officer in an aggressive threatening manner.
Michael Brown is dead because Michael Brown had no respect for a business owner, a police officer, and most importantly himself.
I do not mourn for Michael Brown, I mourn for the innocent people and businesses in Ferguson, and most importantly for the extended family of Officer Wilson.
