It's kind of been transit day here @ TKC but there's just a great deal of news to report on this topic . . . Take a look at Kansas City Mayor Sly already putting Kansas City on track to spend Missouri Transportation Tax money that could come as a result of a recent vote on the toy train.

"The state’s contribution to Phase 2 of the Kansas City Streetcar project shall total $210M over the life of the 10 year transportation sales tax. The $210M budget shall include the $20M capital funding for Prospect MAX and $50M for Streetcar Phase 2, the full amount of the City’s 5% share of the tax identified for cities statewide, and MoDOT discretionary funds above and beyond the formula of funds committed to the MoDOT Kansas City District."
Like it or not, this is just another example of local priories being twisted to power a controversial eco-devo scheme.

ReplyDelete7:56 Anyone who knows anything about transit knows that street cars are not serious transit...serious money but not serious transit. Buses are much more economical. Cost much less per rider mile.

The streetcar doesn't have to be profitable to be successful; the goal is to remove cars from the street and connect people to their living, working, shopping, and dining destinations. It's simply a disproportionate allocation of limited shared resources to an area that has already seen the highest concentration of taxpayer subsidies in the city for decades. And worst of all, citizens of kc were never given a fair vote, and Russ Johnson promises that if this unfair election that they've rigged fails, the city will just try even harder to disenfranchise us next time.

ReplyDeleteIf you'll read the post, Mensa boy, saying the street car would not be profitable was in response to a question about a private company taking it over. You actually have a good point in that public transit, roads, sewers, sidewalks, etc. are not meant to be profitable, but you have yet to answer the really basic questions about the streetcar, among which are: Why would a streetcar be better than buses? And why not invest the money we'll be wasting on the streetcar on more buses and improve the transit system we already have?
10:47 frames the question perfectly; we have an abundance of roads in KC. If we're going to invest in rail, it should absolutely have a dedicated lane. We should be getting some kind of improvement for that kind of investment. Rail is slightly better, but exponentially more expensive.
ReplyDeleteAnd because KC is so spread out, rather than base a rail system on an outdated transit network planned around downtown, we should reform our bus network to connect residential areas to commercial districts and jobs in their own community and neighboring communities. The best way to accomplish a widespread transit overhaul is through buses.
Once we've engineered a system that works for all citizens rather than just a handful in downtown kc, then we can present transit growth data suggesting the best way to create an express system (maybe rail, maybe bus)
