HONORABLE SLY JAMES: MOST POPULAR MAYOR IN KANSAS CITY HISTORY?!?!

Just a quick question for the late night and for anybody who is interested . . . We'll revisit this topic later but a recent comment from a Kansas City cheerleader piqued my interest.

In response to criticism of the Honorable Sly James, a supporter noted: "(He's) the most popular mayor in the history of KC, I think he will be ok."

It occurred to me that I've heard that line before from a lot of people up to and including Mayoral staffers and top ranking political consultants. Th e Mayor's popularity is a talking point intended to crush all dissent and keep other politicos in line.

To wit . . .

WHAT DO YOU THINK . . . IS MAYOR SLY JAMES MORE POPULAR THAN ANY OTHER MAYOR IN KANSAS CITY HISTORY?!?!

For TKC, Mayor Richard Berkley will always hold the title of Kansas City's BEST Mayor . . .

And I don't really see how Sly James has surpassed his legacy.

In fairness, there are A LOT of people who still really like former Mayor Kay Barnes.

Given that politics is nothing more than a popularity contest, this question is important as we enter election season . . . There's no doubting the Mayor's popularity and general goodwill toward the charismatic politico but some of this more enthusiastic support might be overstated.

Developing . . .

  1. He's good. There's no denying it. But maybe he's not that good.

  2. The "most popular mayor" would get his ass handed to him if today were Election Day.

The majority of people in Brookside and Waldo hate him. Ditto the Northland. We're not stupid enough to stay away from the voting booths this time.

  3. I have lost all respect for him because of the streetcar. If he fell for that idea, I don't trust his judgment. Or financial sense. I'm afraid all style, no substance.

  5. No, he's not the most popular. He will go down in ruin!

  6. He's determined, ambitious, and skilled; he makes headlines, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's popular. Perhaps just among the urbanists, who are the most vocal, active people in and around the Pitch, the Star, and popular downtown hang outs.

  7. Like the POTUS, no one can criticize him without being called racist so it gives a false illusion of popularity.

  8. Charlie Wheeler was the best - stood up to greedy union firefighter slobs

  9. Sly was elected by around 21% of the registered voters in KCMO. If he's so popular, it's just because so many residents of the city have been lied to and taken advantage of for so long that they just no longer care.
Sly's popular like a lifeboat on the Titantic; and for pretty much the same reason.
    All hat and no cattle!

  10. One day there will be a play written about the night Sly hid in the cooler at The Cheesecake Factory!

  11. Sly is just like our President. Only fatter.

  14. Folks in Brookside do hate this fool, and we vote.

  15. It's pretty easy to call yourself popular when the meager voting public give you overwhelming support on ballot questions that are egregiously skewed in favor of the political class over the taxpayer.

  17. Sly is like Magic Johnson.....smiling nigger wanting

  18. Everyone knows the real best mayor was Cleaver.

  20. He's so popular he has to "import" whiz kids into the city. And not even that is working.

  21. stupid nigger, just like the one in the White House! niggers FUCK UP everything!!!!

  22. I HAVE ZERO RESPECT FOR SLY JAMES¡ THE MAN IS A DAMN FOOL AND A BULLY. JAMES IS THOUGHTLESS AND SHORT SIGHTED. HIS FECKLESS SPENDING WILL CAUSE GREAT HARM.

  25. Wow, remember when crazy squitiro said funk was "a rock star"? We are seeing the cracks in his reality meter.

So... No! This bully is not the most popular mayor in all of KC history.

Now of he'd take a cue from Bryce Smith and resign then we got something.

  26. Just like the single terminal airport that everyone supports. Sly is wrong on the airport, Sly is wrong on the streetcar, Sly is wrong for KC!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. And he achieved such approval without pandering to bigots like Dale and Lisa Carter?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'd love to fuck Mrs Carter..she's hot and I'd bet Dale wouldn't mind watching.

    ReplyDelete
  29. What about Ilus Davis? I know that it was a long time ago, but this mayor managed a number of major projects and still kept our credit rating. Sorry, Sly isn't even in the top five when you go back to Mayor Bartle (The Chief)in the 1950's.

Sly is a hell of a talker and that's nice. But he ain't much of a leader.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nope. I voted for him, but I've learned my lesson.

  32. Rank amateurs, all of them. Berkely? He was KC's "DO NOTHING" mayor. The only footprint he left was "Do Nothing Mayor Park" down by the river.
Wheeler was the only real qualified mayor KC has ever had.

  33. When I read this I thought, "Oh good April Fool's joke." Then I realized it is May 15th.

  34. KCMO Is Declining5/15/14, 10:02 AM

Bartle, Davis, Wheeler, Berkley...now those were mayors.

Sly James? What has he actually done?

    ReplyDelete
  35. You're far too young to remember Roe Bartle. Suggesting Berkley shows what little young peeps in here know about politics.

  36. 3:00pm We know one thing for certain. We HATE this MAYOR. It's not even a contest. Virtually ANYBODY was a better Mayor, including Mark Funkhouser. I liked the Funk. Good guy. Crazy wife. This current Mayor would be divorced if he it weren't for the fact that they rarely see each other.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Could be why he's so pompous. Just not getting the goods at home.
