"At 10:09 PM last night KCPD officers were dispatched to 4501 Cleveland in regard to a shooting. On arrival they observed a vehicle in the parking lot of a gas station at that location. The driver of the vehicle, a black male in his mid 30s, had been shot and was deceased. A 10 year old passenger of vehicle had also been shot. He was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. A five year old boy who was in the rear seat of the vehicle was uninjured. A black male suspect was observed fleeing the scene on foot following the shooting. Anyone with information about this senseless act is urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS."
Unofficially, this the 19th homicide so far this year compared with 29 at this time last year . . .

ReplyDeletei was awaken by the shots fired and thought it was a dream. i get up and get ready for work to find that my yard and drive way was being blocked. it is sad that soon as it gets warm, kansas citians act in such a foolish way! i was very worried moving back into the city because of all the nosnese that goes on but i moved in anyways. but to find out that it was a child that was shot is just plain stupid! i hope the kid is ok and its sad that i have to watch out for idiots when it gets warm.

City's homicide totals are down from last year, I suspect for two reasons: First, the much colder than usual winter; and, Second, Chief Forte's vigorous defense of his officers in the face of criticism from the Council members like Jermaine Reed. Remember, the post-spring 2008 homicide surge in KCMO was turned around when then-Chief Corwin defended his officers against criticism by Council member John Sharp in April 2010--the homicide total in the twelve months after April 2010 was the lowest we have had in a twelve month period since calender year 2007. Put simply, the choice is up to the city's elite: They can tell the cops on the beat that they will get due process if accused of wrong-doing and then the crime problem will be brought under control because the cops will start doing their jobs again--or they can continue to grovel to the local versions of the PC police in which case KCMO will go the way of Detroit.
