Angry Golden Ghetto School District Debate

Take a look at a couple of Johnson County links regarding an education ruckus over student population fluctuations . . .

KSHB: A group of more than a dozen angry parents cornered Shawnee Mission School District Superintendent Dr. Jim Hinson after Monday night's school board meeting.

Fox4: The problem stems from overcrowding at some Shawnee Mission schools. The school district has shuttered 12 schools since 2001 because of a loss of student population. But in the last couple of years, the district said it has had a sudden increase in students due to young families moving in.

While frustrating for some, these are good problems to have as KCMO copes with the ongoing mass exodus from our local institutions of learning.

  1. Just a bunch of Perfect Village whiners just shut up and go buy another Beamer, you will be happy then.

  2. We're paying enough for Brownback to send $$$ to western Kansas. I don't think this problem will be fixed by just moving a few trailers to the playground at the crowded schools. Surely one of those overpaid SMSD bureaucrats is in charge of an on-going census of 2, 3 and 4-year-olds.

  3. Did anyone mention these schools bus in a bunch of Mexican kids for a special govt program and they are telling neighborhood kids they will have to change schools?

  4. This problem is happening for the same reason the poverty level is ticking up in JoCo. Riff raff is moving into the cheap and outdated rental properties in shady parts of JoCo, and putting a strain on homeowners and taxpayers. I wish the county would either give those areas to WyCo, or raze the slums and replace them with market rate apartments or green space.

  8. Brookwood and Briarwood are among the most affluent schools in the district. There are almost no apartments in either school area. The problem is that the SM School District is getting spotty. Some schools are great; others are pretty awful.
Brookwood and Briarwood are among the stars, so parents who are putting their children first (an exception in some neighborhoods)want their children to attend these elementary schools.
