It was a pleasant surprise to run into my friend Derron Black at Westport Coffeehouse this week.
Mr. Black was in good spirits and we talked for just a moment about local politics and the upcoming election season.
While I groused about the exciting challenges faced in running this dump of blog, Derron Black shared a hint of a new strategy that he's going to use during the upcoming Kansas City election season.
To wit . . .
DERRON BLACK PROMISES A MORE HONEST AND STRAIGHT FORWARD APPROACH TO TALKING ABOUT THE 3RD DISTRICT THAN WHAT'S TYPICALLY OFFERED BY LOCAL POLITICOS!!!
Mr. Black said . . .
"Right now, politically speaking, I don't have anything to lose and we're at a point where the 3rd District and all of Kansas City is in desperate need of a real conversation about the problems we're confronting."
Moreover . . .
"I just don't hear anyone speaking to the issues that are critical for Kansas City."
To that end, Mr. Black said that he's ready to share some personal and political insights via social media.
Now, there are a lot of things about Derron Black that people don't know . . . First and foremost, he had a great sense of humor AND he's actually a fiscal conservative on most issues related to the KCMO budget.
Given recent legal trouble, we don't know how Mr. Black's campaign will develop but any contribution to the local discourse that he makes will be a welcomed departure from the status quo of election time talk.

DeleteThe reason that no one is discussing the issues that are important to the city or the 3rd District is that most of the candidates and elected folks really don't know or particularly care about local issues and don't get involved enough to make any serious and well-informed recommendations.
ReplyDeleteKCMO has an amateurish political class whose primary activity is to run for one office or another, schmooze each other and their friends and supporters, find jobs in nonprofits or local government, and then run for something else.
Look at the clueless group on the council public safety committee, which doesn't even know enough about programs that they approve money for to ask any serious questions about how the money's spent or why the crime numbers don't change in spite of all the claims and cash.
How about candidates with some specific ideas about what city government actually does?

John the farmer was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young layers (hens), called "pullets", and ten roosters, whose job it was to fertilize the eggs.
The farmer kept records and any rooster that didn't perform went into the soup pot and was replaced. That took an awful lot of his time, so he bought a set of tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone so John could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report simply by listening to the bells.
The farmer's favorite rooster was old Butch, a very fine specimen he was, too. But on this particular morning John noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! John went to investigate. The other roosters were chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing. The pullets, hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover.
But to Farmer John's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges.
The result...The judges not only awarded old Butch the No Bell Piece Prize but they also awarded him the Pulletsurprise as well. Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making: who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention.

These posts came at about 1 every 30 seconds for several hours. Then he posted a bunch of random numbers and nonsense. I hope he gets some help but he sure doesn't need to be encouraged by people to run for office - he is clearly "off" a bit. At least get him off facebook where his craziness is exposed.
