Here's a bit of important news that shows a some hope for promoting diversity and inclusiveness for Kansas City taxpayer-funded amenities.
To wit . . .
KANSAS CITY INSIDERS APPLAUD STARLIGHT FOR THEIR RECENT OUTREACH TO THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY IN ORDER TO OFFER MORE INCLUSIVE ENTERTAINMENT OPTIONS!!!
Remember that earlier this year there was a great deal of discussion about the lack of diversity when it comes to the shows slated for Starlight and other activities offered throughout Swope Park.
Now it seems that Starlight officials are working to address this problem outright.
Here's what's happening . . .
- Starlight is seeking input from community leaders on what kind of entertainment options they would like to see.
- There are plans to provide outreach among a broader diversity of community organizations.
- Who knows, (???) maybe we might even get a Starlight "Free Night" to compliment the Zoo's offerings . . . Kidding.
Either way, this bit of Kansas City inclusion is welcomed despite Starlight being plagued by helicopter fly-bys that sometimes interrupt shows, a somewhat dangerous parking situation AND the legacy of a deadly shooting of a patron on her way home that still scares people who know their Kansas City history.
Developing . . .
You know, this is an important stop but I just don't think they're going about it the right way. They should be more open about their policy for picking shows and offer input to EVERYBODY with PAYING CUSTOMER taking priority first. This way they are risking a lot of empty seats. By targeting a specific community they are actually doing a disservice. They key to diversity is to include everyone at the outset and not just try to make quota numbers or quiet any protests that might pop up.
