Kansas City was incorporated on this day in 1853. The territory straddling the border between Missouri and Kansas at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers was considered a good place to build settlements.
From that point on it's pretty much been a festival of mistakes, corruption, infighting, outright fighting, racial divisiveness strangely characterized by a nearly pathological polite and eternally optimistic outlook.
