KC Biz Journal: Historic registration for Kemper Arena wins state approval
This is a win against the pricey plan from the Kempers that would make Kansas City cough up millions and attempt another eco-devo plan after the old school effort to build the area clearly didn't work.

All this is is an attempt to once again get the taxpayers to pick up some of the tab for someone's dreams. If he can get the historic designation, he can apply for tax credits to help fund his plan.

Kemper is an AWFUL, UGLY place that needs to be torn down and replaced with just what the American Royal folks have in mind.

ReplyDeletekemper was not built in the 60s. probably closer to 1973-74. I worked down on Kansas Ave. at that time and was frequently in the west bottoms or driving past on 23rd st.. I watched it built.

ReplyDeleteAs the article says, historic designation doesn't prevent the owner (KC City) from tearing it down. The American Royal has a lease that obligates the City to provide a facility until 2045. This designation is essentially meaningless. The City can still proceed with the plan for a smaller less-expensive facility that will have more events and bring additional money to the area.

Gee! I remember when the public was told that refurbishing Kemper was just not possible. Of course that was shortly before the vote to build Sprint Center. Fucking crooks!!!!
