Steve Rose is one of the smartest guys we've met in the local political sense he's starting off this year with his take on the political landscape:

Steve Rose: Roasts and toasts suitable for the new year

Readers might not agree with all of the insights from Mr. Rose but time and time again he is proven correct more often than not.

  1. Not exactly...the Overland Park Convention Center was a huge success? It hosts like 4 "events" a year, such as the Home and Garden Show, and remains 99% taxpayer supported. Also, isn't this guy supposed to be the new moderate to conservative voice on the Star Ed Board, replacing E. Thomas? His roasts are all Republicans and none for a single Dem. Guess they finally got the right mix on the Ed Board.

  4. Just read this and the column makes zero sense. Tell me this Steve, why are some big public projects that spend a bunch of taxpayer dollars bad (KCI, trolley) and some are good (zoo, Power & Light, OP Convention Center)? Just a little confused here. Also, quote your source on the OP Center making money. I know of no convention center anyplace in this country that actually makes money. If they cover their costs, they are considered very successful.

Are there any dems in power around here worthy of either roasting or toasting? heaping more shit on cleaver for his c-street ties and inability to pay back loans is pretty trite at this point.

i would have added fred logan, the leawood lawyer who decided to get rid of free speech for kansas professors. bill black might blame it on the koch brothers, but i can see plenty of reasons why fred and his buddies on the health and commerce boards might want to shut up the intelligentsia. its not an uncommon move for far-right governments.

it raises a question of whether sitting on multiple boards is a conflict of interest. then again, logan must have little concern for ethics in light of his recent decisions in his role on the regents.

  8. 9:06 and 10:46 have it right, no convention center makes money. That why you seldom see a privately owned convention center and when you do it offers way more than just a convention center. The operating cost for those places per day is choking rather an event takes place or not. I know of one place in Johnson County that just shut down doing large meetings, catered events and the such due to the place sitting empty more hours a month over being used. One or two day events on weekends only does not pay the bills. If it wasn't for Stan Rose, Steve would probably be working as a janitor for the SMSD
