KANSAS CITY MAYOR SLY STANDS UP FOR FAST FOOD WORKER LIVING WAGE DEMAND

Kansas City lunchtime consideration . . .

Mayor Sly James on the topic of fast food wages: "Every person should be able to provide for themselves and their family," he said in the letter. "That concept should be a basic human right in the richest country in the world. Because of your efforts, individuals who have been silenced for too long now have a voice, issues previously swept under the table are now front and center, and we are re-examining our definition of economic independence."

Here's the letter in full:

Meanwhile, if the TKC comments are any indication . . . A great many locals think that a higher fast food wage would inevitably hurt small biz.

  1. Before we take to the unbridled opinion based upon emotion, get familiar with the concept of "zero-sum". We either pay based upon the purchase price, or indirectly via social services. Interestingly, the conservatives should encourage the competitive arena of cost containment via the private sector.

I guess the racists, cum guy, and prostate guy will come at this from their own perspective.

At least Tony will get his hits.

  2. The industry cost of an increase to $10.70 is about 3 to 5%.

I would rather have the fatties who frequent fast food restaurants pay for the increase than my tax dollars.

And here is a personal observation, as people make more money, they move away from fast food, so let this be a regressive, albeit appropriate, hit on those who benefit from the increase.

Anyone familiar with Tony's shape, will appropriately, have him paying for a good part of the increase.

  3. Excuse me, but the Mayor's letter exhibited is stereotypical of "political non-speak"....it's akin to wishing everyone in the city a "good day."

Please ask the Mayor to either be more specific, or retract the statement. His letter, as posted, is TRASH!

  5. Meanwhile the folks at Hamburger University are working feverishly to perfect the customer self-order kiosk. They'll only need a few folks back in the kitchen prepping the food order before putting it on the conveyor belt to the front counter for customer tray pick-up.

  7. Yeah .... well, here's a purely capitalistic, market-driven thought for you:

If you have a business that cannot survive if you pay your employees a decent wage, then the market has decided that you shouldn't be in business. Simple as that.

Somebody always pays. Expecting your employees to survive on food stamps completely defines you as someone who does not understand business.

I, as a taxpayer, find it reprehensible that so many so-called business people in this country expect the public to subsidize their cut-rate enterprises. If you can't make enough money to be in business, then go get a a job from somebody who knows how to run a business.

This could raise the price of a Big Mac? Of course. It would mean you the customer pay the full tab for your burger rather than expecting the taxpayers to subsidize the slave wages of the people who made it.

  9. First a business cannot just raise prices even if all have to pay the same wage. There is a supply and demand curve for every product. Once prices rise too much the consumer just quits buying causing the business to close. The other consequence would be that workers in other fields making low wages would flock to the fast food field. So you would have less jobs with many more applicants. Bottom line most of those now working there would probably be unemployed from closures or from better employees from other fields. You cannot repeal the laws of economics, you can just distort the outcome.
