Kansas City Talking Point: Streetcar Toy Train ALREADY Drives Downtown Economy!!!

Planetizen: Two Years Before Opening, New Streetcar Already Driving Kansas City Development

Here is the paltry bit of evidence . . .

"Building on a decade of phenomenal growth, downtown Kansas City is poised to add 1,500 new and renovated apartment units in time for a new streetcar to begin operating in 2015."

Never mind that this building boom is subsidized by City Hall and really nothing more than a double down on this year's $14.3 Million Dollar LOSS that confronts Kansas City Taxpayers thanks to P&L District folly and will come out of the General Fund.

  1. If folks want to live in downtown KCMO,, they're certainly free to do so, although the idea that that's an "urban environment" is a bit of a stretch.
But the hype about all the brreathless successes and energy has gone way over the top to the point of silliness.
The metro has a population of over 2.3 million. At last count, the downtown KCMO population was 20,000.It's a rounding area in local demographics. And it would be intresting to see how much tax money per downtown resident Sly and the gang have spent and are spending.

  3. The over building of apartments has nothing to do with streetcar. It is all about subsidizes from City Hall and greedy lenders. How many jobs has the streetcar brought?

  4. 6:08 nails it. Where are the jobs? CK's downtown is going to resemble a college town until the murders scare everyone away.
