E-MAIL FIGHT: SNAP VS. KCK ARCHDIOCESE

Quick follow-up on a note from earlier this afternoon . . .

Victim's rights group SNAP announced their plea to keep a controversial priest's funeral private . . .

Their e-mail received this reply from Catholic Officials in KCK . . .

To SNAP Leadership,

Your letter has reached the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, under the leadership of Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann. One would think SNAP would have better management of their mailing lists. I am not, however, surprised that your organization's carelessness spills over into basic management issues.

SNAP responds . . .

It wasn't carelessness. It was urgency.

There's little contact info on Bishop Finn's website. Time is short. We wanted to do all we can to get our message to him so he might take steps to prevent more suffering.

We had hoped you might be willing to forward our message to him. We hope you still will, especially since you are in charge of communications.

Thank you!

This e-mail exchange is enlightening if only because it reveals just a bit of hostility among Catholic officials and groups advocating for victim's rights.

  1. I'd like to play altar boy with those two.

  2. Gee, on the very first page of the diocesan website for KC-St. Joseph is a "contact us" button that has address, phone number, and e-mail.

Guess that's not enough contact information for SNAP.

  3. Dr. Ernest Evans10/24/13, 7:32 PM

I am an educator who has spent 32 years working with young students. People who abuse positions of trust like being a teacher or a clergyman to sexually take advantage of young people are committing a terrible crime. But the Good Book teaches us to hate sin, not the sinner. What this priest did was terribly wrong, but that fact does not make him someone beyond the ministry of those who call themselves Christians. For 20 years I have gone into a prison every week to minister to men who are pedophiles, rapists and murderers--and I have no regrets about having pursued this ministry. Let this deceased man be buried in accordance with the wishes of his family and friends. He is dead and is beyond being hurt, playing politics with his funeral will not hurt him, only those close to him. SNAP, you do a fair amount of good, but on this issue you are being disgracefully unChristian and you should be ashamed of yourselves. Sincerely, Respectfully and In Christ, Ernest Evans (Faithful follower of the Jewish carpenter from Galilee.)
