CELEBRATE THE BIG-ASS KANSAS CITY BANNISTER MALL REPLACEMENT BY CERNER!!! BUT WILL IT WORK?!?!

Sadly, Siri is one of the hotties that we wish didn't do porn . . . And she inspires this last hope for South Kansas City . . .

KCUR: Council OK's Big Incentives for Biggest Ever Office Park

FOX4: City Council approves plan for Cerner to redevelop old Bannister Mall area

KMBC: Cerner gets council OK for $4.3 billion south KC development

KC Biz Journal: KC Council approves $1.6B in incentives for Cerner campus

Now, we've talked this one before but nobody has really asked: Will this project work or is South Kansas City too far gone to save?!?!

After the construction spike that'll mostly go to JoCo (per usual) . . . What's the benefit? Most likely the thousands of workers will be racing home far away from the Bannister site and the first drawings make it seem like nothing more than a show lot for talented car thieves . . . I could be wrong on this one but big plans like this one have flopped in the past and the ambitious project looks good on paper but nowhere else . . .

  1. Start with guard towers and German Shepherds.

  2. Cerner, like Sprint, is investing in the health of their employees by creating a campus that encourages/requires walking.

The streetcar fanatics are RAGING right now, because

    1) THEY CREATED THE TERM "WALKABILITY" AND THE ONLY THING THAT CAN POSSIBLY PROMOTE THAT IS STREETCAR.

    and

    2) The streetcar SHOULD HAVE attracted Cerner into downtown Kansas City, but instead, opted to build from the ground UP in the wasteland of South KC, presumably because tax credits (TIFs) were more beneficial to them than a TDD and and Earnings Tax.

This is a HUGE fail for #kcstreetcar, and they all know it.

  3. Wait, maybe they still have to pay earnings tax at this location, but they don't have to pay the CID or worry about parking for their employees who are not served by the inferior public transit in this city, or the stubborn effort to reduce parking downtown.

  4. The city subsidizes an office park that goes into an area best left to drug dealers and then other offices all over town have increased vacancy. Same thing that Sprint did years ago. The office vacancy rate is huge so we spend tax dollars to make it worse.

  5. You people spend too much time criticizing everything.

  6. Sorry 8:03, but the every criticism on here so far is a real and valid point. Too many people looking at everything through rose-colored glasses is why things are in the mess they're in now.

  7. Generally I'm against subsidies (welfare)for developers, as the project should be economically viable or it shouldn't be built.
However, given the current state of affairs, I support this Cerner project to finally get this tract of land back on track. Yes, most of the employees will likely be driving in from JoCo, Lee's Summit, etc., but Cerner's presence will attract other businesses because they know Cerner is committed to the site for the long-term.

  8. The sucking sounds from your wallet means big bucks for Cerner. A pair of really smart people who know how to pay off local corrupt city councils to get what they want. No doubt we'll be hearing from Kity Kat Sebelius soon about how great this project be for the future of socialize medicine.

  9. This project won't result in greater office vacancy because the jobs for this project don't exist yet. It is creation, not relocation.

Its not a loss of revenue to our wallets because if Cerner decided to build this in Phoenix the revenue would have never been here anyways.

I think this is an example of why officials recognize (when they want) that a very low tax policy creates jobs. I support that every time I see it happen.

  10. Before you start handing out tax abatements how about making that medical research facility part of Cerners give back.

  11. This will have no substantial benefit to the surrounding community. The employees will eat in a cafeteria, drive home to the suburbs and won't even stop at a Quik Trip for fear of being carjacked.

  12. we have a race of people afraid of their own shadow

  13. This project is subsidy city for cerners over shopping for land. Every where cerner goes a hand out follows.

  14. They better hire top notch, armed security.men and women who are prepared to shoot it out.the need will arise alot, until the hood rats figure out they ain't fuckin around.

  15. Btw tony, that's one nasty lookin photo-tramp.

  16. Holy asphalt jungle batman! Did I parking ZZ27 or AZ39! damn!

  17. Kwame Brown got away with his shenanigans for quite awhile too but it finally caught up. KC is the new Detroit after all the deals are made.

  18. Are they gonna have a new Hypermart? Kids need to practice their shoplifting down there and this would be an excellent opportunity for Parks & Recreation.

  19. Looks like a crop circle to me

  20. If Cerner can keep the ghetto rats away, it might work. Otherwise, I feel sorry for the people who have to work there.
