Football and Comedy Weekend: Crazy Fun!
College football and the NFL are in full swing this weekend. So we begin putting up my picks each week for selected games. Let me explain briefly how my board works. Instead of choosing to bet on the exciting games where the match ups are almost a coin flip, we will look harder at mismatches that give you a greater chance to win. Many of you might be a bit disappointed when the local college teams and the Chiefs are not part of the equation. While betting with your neighbor or your pals at work is kind of okay, serious betting is illegal in most cases. I suggest that if you are really gonna risk more than a few bucks that you make your bets live and in person where gambling is legal in places like Las Vegas, Reno or Atlantic City. Many people bet online. Remember, this is generally not legal either. Maybe a bigger issue with on-line betting is that you have no recourse if they choose to fold their tent and not pay anybody. When you check into these on-line services you will see they are generally out of the country with home bases in South America or some other foreign city. Great, now I’ve given you the disclaimer, let the games begin.
As we enter the second week in college football, we’ve already seen a pretty big separation between the top teams and everyone else. I am one who believes in using the tease system quite often. Let me explain. If you pick two different teams, college or pro, in two different games you are allowed to move the point spread six points either way. You must win both games to win. If you tie and win one, in most cases that is a push or no bet. I have noticed some online places as well as some sports books even in Vegas consider a tie a loss. Make sure you check out the answer to this question before you place a bet with either. The tease is most effective when your powerhouse team like Alabama or Ohio State is a huge favorite over a nobody. All too often a team like Alabama will be a thirty point favorite over a weaker team but not cover the spread. Say Alabama is a thirty point favorite over Kansas, it’s safer to move the betting line down six just in case Alabama puts in the second and third string players late in the game and blows the spread.
Another key element is the money line. Let’s say we like Kansas City over the Jaguars. However the spread is four and a half points and the Chiefs are the favorite team. It is often prudent to take the favorite even up, no points given. This really comes into play when you have to give up over three points in a game like this where the Chiefs are an average team playing a really bad team like the Jaguars. So if you take the money line and have the Chiefs even, you would have bet $140 to win $100. So if KC wins by a field goal which is only three points, I still win. You win less money, but you still win.
MU (-10) over Toledo; Oregon (-18) over Virginia…this is a tease bet
Michigan (-4) over Notre Dame
New England (-4) over Buffalo; Colts (-4)over Raiders…this also is a tease bet.
Tampa Bay (-4) over the New York Jets
KC Chiefs (+2) over Jags; Houston (+2) this is a tease.
Enjoy your football weekend.
If you can’t make it out to Vegas or Reno this weekend; come out to Stanford & Sons this weekend to see hilarious Blue Collar comedy star Mike Speenberg.
“You ain’t my real rabbi, You’re my step-rabbi! I don’t have to listen to you. “ Mike toured three years ago with Larry the Cable Guy nationwide and this past year toured with Jeff Foxworthy. Speenberg has been seen on CMT and this fall has his own reality show on the CW. He’s one of my favorite twangy comics that isn’t a big name star…yet. Co-starring with him is David Kious a master of both improve and stand up that you have heard DJing on some of your favorite radio stations including Mix 93 and Alice 102.
Superstar September kicks off the 11th through the 14th with the two stars of VH!’s longest running show, ‘That Metal Show’, now in its 11th season; Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson who also starred on Comedy Central’s ‘Crank Yankers’. Florentine became hot with his Special Ed Character ‘I got Mail! I got Mail! Yay!’ Jim and Don also won an Emmy for their comedy work on ‘Inside the NFL’ on HBO.
September 19th thru the 21st Comedy Superstar Carlos Mencia will do a full weekend at Stanfords for the first time since the late 1990’s. Mencia is considered by most the most talented Latino comic of our time. Mencia starred for five seasons on Comedy Central’s ‘The Mind of Mencia’ and several movies including ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ with Ben Stiller.
September 26th thru the 28th sees the arrival of comedy/TV/Film star extraordinaire, TJ Miller. Miller has starred and co-starred in more than 20 films over the last four years including; Cloverfield, She’s Outta Your League, Get Him to the Greek, Yogi Bear, Unstoppable, Rock of Ages, How to Train Your Dragon and Gulliver’s Travels to name a few. TJ just completed his starring role in ‘Search Party’ for Universal and is finishing the filming of Transformers IV with Mark Wahlberg. On top of all that, he has three TV series on the air right now, including Mash Up on Comedy Central, The Goodwin Games on FOX and his new HBO series this fall. Where does he find the time? Miller will also do a podcast from Stanfords live. With his extremely busy schedule and large paydays, TJ does not do comedy clubs anymore. He tries to do his home club in Denver, where he is from and of course, Stanford & Sons where he had his first week as a headliner just four short years ago. TJ is a rarity in this business, he’s extremely loyal. Go out of your way to see this monster act, his mere presence and charisma will blow you away. Tickets are on sale for all these great shows now online at stanfordscomedyclub.com or call the club at (913)400-7500. Follow me on Twitter @KCKingofSting.
