THE TKC SATURDAY NIGHT PLAYLIST!!! RECURRENT COMPLAINT FROM KANSAS CITY URBAN SUMMIT ECO-DEVO FORUM: CITY HALL IGNORES MINORITY HIRING!!!
Pet projects have swamped City Hall as of late. However, from the toy train streetcar to a pricey soccer field in South Kansas City and then the upcoming push for a Downtown Convention Hotel - The common complaint from local minority leaders is that Minority Hiring Enterprise (MBE) regs are being ignored.
Mayor and Council have avoided a great deal of MBE rules because they've passed legislation for so many pet projects by way of "emergency" ordinance. This shady tactic has allowed Mayor and Council to throw out the rule book on a great many City Hall projects but economic incentives for the urban core have been noticeably lacking . . . Given that so many other Kansas City white collar businesses are in line for cash from 12th & Oak, this complaint isn't totally unfair . . .
To wit . . .
WHAT WE'RE HEARING FROM TODAY'S KANSAS CITY URBAN SUMMIT ECO-DEVO FORUM IS A GROWING AND CONSTANT CHORUS OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING MINORITY HIRING EXCLUSION ON SO MANY KANSAS CITY PET PROJECTS!!!
Yes, the toy train could be heading East of Troost . . . But will any minorities be hired in its construction or at the managerial level? So far the toy train push seems like a mostly hipster/white endeavor with promises of economic development that focus more on downtown than urban core neighborhoods.
The consensus from so many minority leaders today is constant and clear . . . City Hall has let down the urban core when it comes to inclusion on City Projects.
And all of this has inspired tonight's playlist . . .
As always, thanks for reading this week and have a safe and fun Saturday night.
