Labor Day Weekend
At Stanford & Sons and
Last week, Stanford’s had household name Chris Kattan from Saturday Night Live and packed the place. It’s always easy to get everyone’s attention with big name acts. As I’ve mentioned before, Stanford’s really enjoys promoting area talent that has moved upward and onward over the past several years to become a national headliner. This weekend you have the opportunity to see an extremely talented young headliner born and raised in Kansas City (he went to Shawnee Mission West) who now lives and works in Los Angeles. Tim Gaither started his career at Stanford’s in Westport just over a decade ago. Tim was discovered by talent scouts at the Overland Park Stanford & Sons in the mid 2000’s. That landed him an opportunity to work out of Hollywood with both Jeff Foxworthy and Ron White (from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour).
Tim has been seen several times on Country Music Television and other cable shows. Gaither has become a regular at LA’s famous ‘Comedy Store’. Over the last several years he has shifted his style to be more mainstream and has worked with and been endorsed by great comics like Bill Burr and Russell Brand. Gaither recently just landed a one hour Showtime special which he will be working on this weekend at Stanford & Sons. Tim’s co-star this week is another former KC guy now living in Phoenix, Arizona; Justin Leon.
Stanfords is excited about super-star September, it may be the best three week run of the last two years. It all starts with Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson (from ‘Crank Yankers’ and ‘That Metal Show’ on VH1) September 11th thru September 14th. Florentine became internationally famous when he introduced his ‘Special Ed’ character on Crank Yankers alongside superstar Eminem. You hear them all the time on 98.9 The Rock with Johnny Dare. September 19th thru 21st is the return of comedy sensation Carlos Mencia, star of Comedy Central’s ‘Mind of Mencia’. Carlos has mentioned several times on National radio that one of his favorite clubs is Stanford & Sons in Kansas City, he was a staple of the club in Westport in the nineties. Through the last fifteen years Mencia has been busy with tv shows and movies like ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ with Ben Stiller. In 2007, Carlos and I worked together at the Midland which he sold out. Mencia has dropped in a couple of times on off nights like Tuesdays or Wednesdays to do a show or two as a favor to the club. This will be his first full weekend at Stanfords since 1998. This is a show you really need to go out of your way to see, and all the shows will sell out so get your tickets early.
Carlos is a good friend, but I must confess, I’m equally as excited to see TJ Miller at Stanfords September 26th thru the 28th. TJ is now the new mega-force in television and film comedy stardom. From his original co-starring role in’ Cloverfield’ in 2008, to ‘Rock of Ages’ in 2012, TJ has been appearing and starring in over 20 films. Others include; ‘She’s Out of Your League’, ‘Unstoppable’, ‘Yogi Bear’, ‘Get Him to the Greek’, ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, and ‘Gullivers’ Travels’ to name a few. TJ also stars in three television series all within this last year including ‘Mash Up’ on Comedy Central, ‘The Goodwin Games’ on Fox and his new series on HBO this fall. His credits over this period of time are unparalleled by any other comedy performer. This doesn’t even include his many stand-up dates across the country. At thirty, Miller is considered already to be the heir apparent to guys like Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller in the comedy world. So why go back to Stanford’s? One of TJ’s family members is from Kansas City and TJ felt we were kind enough to give him his first headline week at an ‘A’ club back in ’08. TJ is not only close with me and my brother Jeff, he loved working with my late brother Jack who died in an automobile accident back in 2011. It was TJ who on his own dime flew in to do a memorial comedy show in Jack’s memory shortly after his death. TJ’s schedule does not allow him to do comedy clubs any more so this is a rare chance to see a comedy star on the brink of mega-stardom up close and personal. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention he just finished filming the new Transformer’s movie with co-star Mark Wahlberg. If you are any kind of comedy fan at all, this has to be the show you don’t want to miss. TJ Miller is a rarity in today’s entertainment world; he has a big heart and is a loyal person. He doesn’t let pesos get in the way of his decisions. That, in and of itself, makes him unique.
It is because of all the things you’ve read above that make Stanford & Sons a legendary entertainment venue. That is something we are all very proud of.
