Craig Considers The Social Media Generation

TKC NOTE: Tonight, our pal Craig Glazer shares some rather thoughtful insights on the impact of social media on American culture and relationships. Take a look:

Bye Bye Baby Boomers

Well folks, it’s finally happened. Generation X couldn’t do it. Generation Y fell short. Now the Social Media Generation has scored the knockout punch. It’s their world, baby, we’re just living in it. If you are forty-nine to sixty something, you are a Baby Boomer. While we still rule the financial world, we’ve been kicked to the curb by these Facebooking, on-line, ever-Tweeting, and social media monsters.

I know, I know, a couple generations that followed us Baby Boomers tried, in so many ways, to find that new ‘thing’ to take over. They came up with a few new drugs like ecstasy and ice. Marijuana got stronger and home grown at a high level. Clothing styles changed ever so slightly, but overall, remained much the same as it had in the sixties, seventies and eighties. They expanded TV and Film to more and more stuff, but basically the same. The two big changes were reality TV and the music changed to hip-hop and rap. Gee, thanks. What talent. Glad we don’t have to put up with people who can really sing or act anymore.

Nightlife remained pretty much the same as it did in the Boomer generation, meet at bars, get drunk and high, dinner, dancing, man, do I love that DJ. Now, it’s all come CRASHING DOWN!

Today, if you didn’t read it on-line in the last few days, it never happened and won’t be remembered, whatever it is. The social media has destroyed the arts, for the most part. Rock and roll is dead. Anybody can be a star on Youtube, so we don’t need real movie or TV stars any more. ‘Man, Cindy did a song about how cool birds and cats are and it got over a million hits on Youtube! Wonder how much she made?’ I can assure you, not much. Thirty days later, no one will know who she is. And she won’t be on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, oh sorry, I mean Jimmy Fallon. Doesn’t matter, no one watches late night television any more anyway. People are too busy tweeting, or being on Facebook and playing computer games. Nightlife. That’s been cut down to a chosen few people who still insist, for whatever reason, on dealing with the real world. Ladies Night, Cheap Drink Night and beer specials no longer create a line at the door of most nightclubs. In fact, other than a handful of bars and nightspots in most major cities, weeknights are dead. By the way, that’s true even in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, I know, because I am there all the time. Friday night’s are half as well attended as they used to be, and Saturday’s are still the busiest nights, but they are a far cry from what they used to be.

Why? Everybody meets on-line. You can meet that young lady you’ve been chatting with on Facebook Thursday night at Starbuck’s. Make sure you don’t stay out too late. Even the hip-hop and rap clubs have taken a big hit. Only a small handful in Kansas City are successful.

The worst news, the Social Media Generation has taken away our history and culture. History for the most part is no longer a big item in school. Remember when you were in school and the Civil War was at least one or two chapters in your history book, as was World War II? Now they are half page entries at best. Vietnam’s a paragraph and Korea is a line or two. The only time our Social Media Generation hears about famous Americans like Davey Crockett, Daniel Boone, General George Custer, General Douglas MacArthur, Bat Masterson, President Andrew Jackson, Sergeant York, or Audie Murphy, just to name a few, is if they show up in a franchise fantasy film as a bad guy, otherwise they are completely forgotten about along with some of their equally famous contemporaries.

Now the big shocker, and if you don’t believe what I’m about to say, go test it on college graduates even in your own family. You will find what I am about to say to be a hundred percent true. College graduates cannot tell you who commanded the Union Army (General Grant) or the Confederates (Robert E. Lee) they do not know. If you ask them what color uniforms the North and South wore, they do not know. Less than five percent can tell you who the ‘bad guys’ were in World War II (Germany, Japan and Italy). The majority cannot tell you who bombed Pearl Harbor or why PT 109 and JFK are connected. I can continue this example list, but it will only frustrate you further.

The social media has made things faster and easier but it has also taken away history and the importance of the past and stolen the thunder from all aspects of American life from entertainment, to politics, to day to day news. Today’s stars are generally people who create controversy with missteps in media, politics and sports. Today, Lindsay Lohan is a household name, she has done almost nothing of merit in her acting career and is now more famous for her legal mistakes than anything else. Sadly, the people who recognize her couldn’t recognize Audrey or Katherine Hepburn. Meryl Streep will join that group in the next couple of years.

I asked my wait-staff aged 18 to 24 the following questions. Who is John Wayne? Four of them didn’t know, two thought he was a country western singer. Who are the Beatles? Three didn’t know, one thought they were a football team and one heard of them because her mom used to listen to them. Finally, and my favorite, you know Paul Newman died recently. One of them responded, ‘Really, the salad guy died?’

Final thought, I’ll take the sixties, seventies eighties and nineties over today.

  5. Glazer if you haven't figured out that the haters are in love with your ass, WTF. You're smarter than that. They got you so mad you don't want to be on KCC. Why? Man how many guys any age get the attention you get my friend. In this town? You and who? So shut up. Enjoy the ride. Let them fire away. So what. Liked the Pitch story by the way.

  6. Couldn't agree more Craig. I'm 43 and feel fortunate to grow up at the tail-end of still being able to have fun. As a teenager in Overland Park if the cops caught driving with a couple of beers in you they would tell you to go straight home. That's instead of the automatic 10,000 DUI you get now. Pour your beer out instead of a minor in possesion that loses you your scholorship. Go to a bar during the week now. It's full of families and the place is empty by 10:00. Add to it the job market still sucks and everybody is so f-ing in debt they are terrified to lose their job they hate. The younger people I work with don't go out nearly as much as my friends and I did when we were their age. Maybe it's just me but I would rather have beers out with friends than just Facebook at home but the younger generation doesn't feel that way. Just remember, when you're sitting on your ass at home you sure as hell aren't going to meet a girl that night.

    1. Yep I'm pretty sure the main contributor to people staying home is militarized cops and ubiquitous security. Too much risk you might have one too many beers and end up with a practically life ending charge.

Dumbing down college and highschool courses for folks modestly qualified to pick their fuckin noses is a malfeasance created and initiated by the usual suspects.

    Read this article and

"dumbing down" requirements for graduation and acceptance into schools who now revise history and preach false narratives to the unitiated in order to further political agendas and create armies of lemmings.

  60. Craig, every aging generation has had is crank writing in whatever media is prominent about all these new-fangled gadgets that have taken all the fun out of life, and how kids today really don't know what fun is.

And music? If you think it is all hip-hop and rap, then you really don't know what you are talking about. That's like saying all comedians today are exactly like J.J. Walker. And if you think it is a rather new thing born in the social media generation, you are also sadly mistaken. Did you know Tupac has been dead for 17 years, and Notorious B.I.G. for 16?

Pete Townshend of the Who was on a talk show recently talking about the explosion of truly creative, new music that is possible because of newly emerging technologies.

Back in his day, he said, you needed studio time just to cut a demo, then a corporate record deal and radio play to get your music out.

These days, musicians can cut a high quality recording with a laptop, and put that out globally in any number of ways, including social media, and letting the audience decide what is there cup of tea.

And Townshend said that has created an explosion in creativity that has never been seen before.

In other words, democracy has taken over the music industry, and I kinda think that's a good thing.

  61. "I asked my wait-staff aged 18 to 24 the following questions."

Right. Judge an entire generation by a handful of people working as "wait staff" at a strip mall comedy club. Especially, the 24-year-old.

Assuming for the sake of argument that this little story isn't simply more of your usual bullshit, it tells me far more about your wait staff than it does about the so-called Social Media Generation.

    ReplyDelete
  62. No it proves beyond reasonable doubt that only an idiot would work for Glazer

    ReplyDelete
  63. Byron can't post at KCC because Hearne would expose what a fake he is by doing so. Just as he is about to do with the H man.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Once again thank all of you for some good comments here, Chuck you kill me. Byron you sound like a sharp person...the 'hate team' is always at work around the clock, where would be without them.

Hey you may be right about my anger at KCC. I just get tired of attacks with no value other than to hope other readers see it often enough to believe the insane b.s. these guys put up, some here too, that's true. Also I feel a bit used by Hearne, my pal, he is a pro at left handed compliments. "Hey wild man"...we've been buds for 20 years, I expect better, but that's Hearne.

As for a few comments here about "you made that up, those people didn't say that" .. sad to say its a game I have played for a couple years with staff and at Woodside pool, all over with mostly college grads or bright young people. I've only had maybe 2 get the 'who are the bad guys in WW11 right out of several hundred...I've had like one know who Pual Newman is or was out of maybe 100 on that one, all closer to 20 than say 30...look they don't and don't care about the recent past, other than guys care some on sports, even then don't ask about the Chiefs glory years of the Super Bowls, they know almost nobody and nothing on that. Sorry its just true as the story say, its the way it is in this new age. Its not a 'me' generation like ours, though it still is for majority....its a 'now' generation and we con't care about yesterday, unless it affects them personally.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Look for those of you over 45 when you go out today or to work, ask those questions to young folks, people near 20...about the civil war, world war two, who is Newman, the Beatles name two, name one, so on...you will be shocked likely most will get zero right or one. Try it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Glazer some of us do like you and enjoy what you write. You are a crazy fucker on radio.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Again, Glazer, you have only proven that the staff at Woodside is as dumb as the staff at Stanford's.

By the way, does your club serve alcohol? If so, is there some peculiarity in Kansas law that allows you to hire 18-year-olds as wait staff?

  91. 3 reasons I like Craig Glazer: no other writer that matters or is on radio or media in KC exposes his life and times like Glazer, never been done, never. Whitlock did to some extent but didn't have the stories or the life. Two: His articles are open, honest and cause much argument, fun. three: He's the real deal, I think he was the man in the book, King of Sting, a regular guy who became something above it all, a real modern day outlaw, love it.

Don't like him: He thinks women are toys, has far too little respect from what I read and hear for women. He may die a lonely guy, maybe he's ok with that. two: He fights the haters too much, let it go or make light of it I say. three: he over thinks things. Life is kinda simple, he makes it too complicated, even for Glazer.

I got more but that's enough. See you at KCC.
